For 28 years, East and West Germany have no longer been separated – meaning that on December 31st, Germany will have been united longer than it was divided by the Wall and barbed wire. However, significant differences remain between the old and new federal states, as revealed in the Federal Government's 2018 annual report on the state of German unity . As the Statista graphic shows, economic output is still lower than in the rest of Germany. The average gross domestic product (GDP) across Germany in 2017 was around €39,500. In East Germany, it was only €28,323. Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania had the lowest GDP at €26,560, while the city-state of Hamburg led the ranking by a wide margin with €64,567.
