The Chinese company Jinko Solar made around $4.3 billion in sales in 2019 from the sale of photovoltaics and feed-in systems. With Canadian Solar, JA Solar and Yingli, three other at least partly Chinese companies are among the solar companies with the highest sales worldwide, as the Statista graphic shows. The German company SMA Solar Technology also generated sales of over one billion US dollars in 2019.

The share of solar energy in total electricity generation from renewable energy sources is increasing every year. In contrast to wind energy, for example, photovoltaic systems do not require a lot of construction effort as they can easily be placed on the roofs of existing or new buildings. This is also the plan of Bavaria's Prime Minister Markus Söder - he has decided that photovoltaics should be installed on every new building in Bavaria from 2021. The requirements initially only apply to commercial buildings, but from 2022 this will also apply to private construction projects.
