🔍 Study reveals: Overwhelm in the new work reality

🌍 The world of work is changing rapidly

The world of work is undergoing rapid change, which presents many employees with major challenges. A study commissioned by LinkedIn from the market research institute Censuswide, carried out from September 2nd to 10th, 2024, sheds light on the effects of this transformation on German employees. The online survey of 2,024 employees aged 18 to 77 shows that 70 percent of respondents feel overwhelmed by the speed of change. The younger generations in particular – 46 percent of Generation Z and 49 percent of Millennials – are worried about being left behind. Only 34 percent of those aged 45 to 54 and 23 percent of those over 55 share this fear.

🔧 Digitalization is driving this change significantly

Digitalization, particularly through artificial intelligence (AI) and the establishment of hybrid working models with remote work, is driving this change significantly. Automated processes, increased efficiency and flexible working models offer new opportunities, but also bring with them new challenges. The study identifies two main problem areas: the integration of remote work and the use of AI.

🏠 The integration of remote work

30 percent of those surveyed see the successful integration of remote work into everyday work as the biggest hurdle. The changed communication channels in the home office lead to difficulties in teamwork and less efficient communication overall for 25 percent. The increasing spatial separation and the loss of spontaneous exchange opportunities make informal communication more difficult and can lead to misunderstandings and inefficient processes. The lack of physical presence can also affect the team spirit and social bonds within the team.

🤖 Another challenge is the integration of AI

26 percent of those surveyed see this as a major problem. Although 30 percent of those surveyed would like to use AI in their everyday work, they feel uncertain about using the new technology. This uncertainty often results from a lack of training and the rapid development in the AI field. Operating the programs, interpreting the results and the ethical implications of using AI pose challenges for many employees.

📚 Professional experience alone is no longer enough

The study makes it clear that professional experience alone is no longer enough to be successful in the modern working world. 33 percent of respondents emphasize the need for ongoing training to keep up with technological developments. Almost half (48 percent) confirm that pure professional experience is no longer enough to meet the requirements. 34 percent would like more orientation and concrete recommendations for action in order to acquire the necessary skills for the future.

🔄 Advancing digitalization requires new skills

Advancing digitalization requires new skills and competencies. In addition to technical skills in dealing with AI and other digital tools, so-called soft skills such as adaptability, problem-solving skills, communication skills and the ability to learn independently are also becoming increasingly important. The ability to quickly adapt to new technologies and changing working conditions becomes a crucial success factor.

💡 The study also shows the importance of further training

The study also shows that investing in training is a high priority for many employees. 58 percent of those surveyed are increasingly using external training opportunities to expand their skills and improve their career opportunities. However, 28 percent say they don't have the time for further training. Here, employers are asked to promote a culture of continuous learning and to provide their employees with the necessary resources and time freedom. Further training measures should not be viewed as a cost factor, but rather as an investment in the future of the company. Qualified employees are the basis for innovation and competitiveness.

🚀 The results of the LinkedIn study underline the need for a proactive approach

The results of the LinkedIn study underline the need to proactively deal with the changing world of work. Both employees and employers must face the new challenges and actively participate in shaping the future of work. Lifelong learning, promoting digital skills and creating a flexible and learning-conducive working environment are crucial factors for success in the modern working world. The transformation of the world of work offers opportunities for growth and innovation, but also requires a rethink and a willingness to continuously adapt. This is the only way to successfully overcome the challenges and fully exploit the potential of the new working world.
