Google, Amazon, Facebook, and Apple (GAFA) spent a combined $54.7 million on lobbying in the US in 2018 – an increase of approximately 11 percent compared to the previous year. Google had by far the largest lobbying budget at $21.2 million. In contrast, Apple invested only $6.6 million in influencing Washington policy. It is also interesting to consider what these companies are lobbying for and against. For example, according to a report in The Guardian, to influence data privacy laws worldwide in favor of the company.
