🌿 Gigaplants: A way to reduce CO2 levels to 1950 levels
🌍 An innovative idea against climate change
The idea of creating synthetic forests in deserts to dramatically reduce CO2 levels in the atmosphere is a revolutionary vision from the Obrist Group. This initiative could return CO2 levels to 1950 levels within 100 years. The “Modern Forest”, a concept from the Obrist Group, is up to 30 times more effective than natural forests in reducing CO2.
🌲 The concept of Modern Forest
🌞 A sustainable solution for the future
Frank Obrist, the founder of the Obrist Group, has developed an innovative process that not only removes CO2 from the atmosphere, but also produces methanol as a sustainable energy source and elemental carbon. This process uses direct air capture technology (DAC) to efficiently capture carbon dioxide and convert it into methanol. Methanol, also known as “aFuel”, can be used in a variety of ways in industry, for heat generation and in transport.
Thorsten Rixmann, Chief Marketing Officer of the Obrist Group, explains that the synthetic forest absorbs CO2 and produces oxygen, similar to a natural forest. In contrast to photosynthesis, however, this does not produce sugar, but rather liquid methanol. The process is particularly efficient in regions with high solar radiation such as deserts and wastelands where traditional reforestation is not possible.
💨 Gigaplants: The CO2 vacuum cleaners
⚛️ Innovative power for the environment
The Obrist Group has developed the concept of Gigaplants – large plants that simultaneously produce methanol and carbon and act as “CO2 vacuum cleaners”. A single gigaplant can produce almost four million tons of methanol annually and remove over 6.2 million tons of CO2 from the atmosphere. In comparison, a natural forest of the same size can sequester less than half a million tons of CO2 per year.
Frank Obrist emphasizes: “The Modern Forest is not intended to replace natural forests, but rather to make unused fallow land and desert regions dual-use.” This is done by providing a cost-effective energy source and a more effective method for reducing CO2.
🔬 Technological innovations in the DAC process
💧 Efficient water use
A key component of the Modern Forest is the Obrist Group's special DAC process. Dr. Johannes Prock, Chief Technology Officer of the Obrist Group, describes the process: “We use caustic soda, which binds CO2 particularly easily. The resulting sodium carbonate is then converted into sodium bicarbonate.” This process requires little water and is therefore ideal for dry desert areas.
💼 Economic and technical feasibility
📊 Trust through expertise
The feasibility of the project was confirmed through comprehensive due diligence by ILF Consulting Engineers, ETL-IP and BDO. These studies prove the technical and economic feasibility of the Gigaplants and the Modern Forest. Interested investors can request the due diligence report from Obrist Group.
🌎 Global impact and vision
⏳ An ambitious future
If about two percent of the world's desert area were covered with synthetic forests - equivalent to about 2,700 gigaplants - global energy needs could be met entirely by aFuel. In addition, fossil fuels could be replaced by green methanol. The CO2 content in the atmosphere could be reduced to 1950 levels. At that time, the CO2 level was around 290 ppm (parts per million), while in 2023 it was measured at 420 ppm.
Frank Obrist predicts that CO2 levels will peak at around 450 ppm around 2050. From this point, a gradual reduction could occur over a period of 100 years through the use of Modern Forests.

🌍🌳🌳 The climate crisis and innovative solutions
🌳 The climate crisis is one of the greatest challenges of our time, and innovative solutions are urgently needed to slow global warming and reduce carbon emissions. A groundbreaking development in this area is the “Modern Forest” concept, which was developed by the Obrist Group under the leadership of the visionary inventor and entrepreneur Frank Obrist. This technology promises to accelerate CO2 reduction at an unprecedented scale while creating a sustainable energy source.
🌱 The vision of the Modern Forest: 30 times more effective than conventional forests
Frank Obrist and his team have developed the “Modern Forest”, a synthetic solution that is up to 30 times more effective at reducing CO2 levels in the atmosphere than conventional forests. The “Modern Forest” does not function through photosynthesis, as is the case with natural forests, but rather uses a process developed by the Obrist Group for direct carbon capture from the air (Direct Air Capture, DAC). The process removes CO2 from the atmosphere and converts it into methanol, a liquid energy source that can be used as an “atmospheric fuel” (aFuel) in industry, for heat generation and in transport.
“Our Modern Forest is a real climate saver,” explains Frank Obrist, “by not only efficiently filtering carbon dioxide from the air, but also producing methanol, which can replace fossil fuels.” This process could therefore have a doubly positive effect: which reduces carbon dioxide emissions while providing a sustainable energy source. A particularly notable aspect of this technology is that it works best in precisely those regions where traditional tree reforestation is not possible - such as desert areas.
🏭 Gigaplants: The solution for wastelands and desert regions
The idea of “gigaplants” expands the concept of the modern forest to a large-scale industrial level. These gigantic plants are intended not only to remove CO2 from the atmosphere, but also to produce methanol and elemental carbon. “A single Gigaplant can produce almost four million tons of methanol and almost 230,000 tons of carbon annually and at the same time filter over 6.2 million tons of CO2 from the air,” says Thorsten Rixmann, Chief Marketing Officer of the Obrist Group.
The technology is based on a patented DAC process that binds CO2 using caustic soda, a substance that is also used in baking pretzels. This creates sodium carbonate, which is converted into sodium bicarbonate (baking powder) in the next step. This substance then decomposes at relatively low temperatures, which can be generated by waste heat, releasing the stored CO2, which is converted into methanol.
This process requires very little water, which allows it to be used in desert areas where humidity is often below ten percent. “The Modern Forest works best exactly where conventional forests would fail,” emphasizes Dr. Johannes Prock, Chief Technology Officer of the Obrist Group.
🌳 A comparison with natural forests
A comparison between the performance of a natural forest and a gigaplant illustrates the potential of this technology. While a natural forest the size of a gigaplant can only remove around half a million tons of CO2 from the air per year, the synthetic plant can remove over 6.2 million tons. This means that the “Modern Forest” is around twelve times more efficient at binding CO2 than a natural forest of the same size.
However, Frank Obrist emphasizes that the Modern Forest is by no means intended to replace natural forests. “It’s not about displacing the forests, but about making sensible use of unusable areas such as deserts and fallow land,” he says. “With the Modern Forest we can make these areas usable for global energy supply and at the same time make a significant contribution to reducing greenhouse gases.”
