WAGO opens up -to -modern logistics center: Sustainability meets Automation

Wago Sondershausen: state -of -the -art central warehouse transforms the company logistics

In May 2025, the connection and automation technology specialist Wago opened his new central warehouse at the Sondershausen location. With an investment of over 50 million euros, the company underlines its long -term commitment to the Thuringian location. The new highly automated logistics center doubles the previous storage capacity and sets new standards in the industry through innovative technologies and sustainable concepts.

The development of the Sondershausen location

From the beginning to regional economic strength

Wago's commitment in Sondershausen dates back to 1990 when the company with only six employees in the former social building of Kali-Südharz AG recorded its production. In the past three decades, the location has continued to develop and has grown to the largest employer in Northern Thuringia today with over 1,000 employees. Since its foundation, more than 200 million euros have been invested in the location, making Wago one of the most important companies in the region.

The history of the logistics center

An important milestone in the development of the location was the opening of the central logistics and distribution center in July 1999 in the Kalkhügel industrial estate in Sondershausen. With an initial area of 5,300 m², the center served as the basis for the international logistics of the world market leader in the field of feather clamping technology. Rainer Baade, then head of the central warehouse, recalls: “When we packed the first shipping box in December 1999, nobody suspected what great development the Sondershausen central warehouse would take. A fully automatic high -bay warehouse was true pioneering work at the time.

Several extensions have already been carried out over the years - initially in 2003 and then again 2015. With the current expansion in 2025, the logistics center now almost reaches its original size.

Structural measures and capacities

The expansion of the logistics center was realized in an impressive 17 months on a 35,000 m² property. The centerpiece forms a state -of -the -art high -bay warehouse with an area of 11,000 m², which more than doubled the previous capacity. A significant increase in capacity was achieved with space for up to 160,000 containers and 5,700 pallets.

The original storage options were limited to 45,000 containers and 3,600 pallets with an annual resolution capacity of around 195,000 orders. With the current expansion, the logistics center can accommodate a total of 300,000 containers and process over one million orders annually - a remarkable increase that reflects the growing importance of the location.

Automation and modern technologies

The new central warehouse starts at the highest technological level. It comprises a five-gass, fully automatic pallet high-lane warehouse, each two-grassy automatic small parts and a shuttle warehouse as well as its extensive conveyor network for pallet, container and cardboard goods. This advanced infrastructure enables daily processing of up to 12,000 orders in full expansion.

Automation is supplemented by numerous robotics solutions for the depaletting, palletizing and picking. In addition, there are automatic cardboard bodies and closers as well as comprehensive automation in the shipping area. For the employees, state -of -the -art and ergonomically optimized pick -up workplaces were also set up that enable efficient and health -friendly work.

Sustainability as a central component

Environmentally friendly building technology

In accordance with the company's sustainability strategy, the responsible handling of resources and energy -efficient technologies were particularly taken into account when planning the new logistics center. An outstanding feature is that the new building completely does without fossil fuels. Instead, the building is heated by an intelligent heat pump system and has a large -scale photovoltaic system for its own electricity generation.

Innovative packaging technology

A special innovation is the introduction of a “paper wrapper” for wrapping pallets - a technology that is used for the first time in German -speaking countries. Unlike conventional packaging methods, this special machine used paper instead of plastic film. Diana Wilhelm, Vice President Corporate Logistics at WAGO, explains the background: “Sustainability is not an option for WAGO, but a central component of our corporate strategy. [...] We also wanted to break new ground in shipping and decided on a paper wrap to reduce the CO2 footprint compared to stretch foil.

The paper winder works similarly to a classic winder, but wraps the palletized goods with special, fully recyclable paper from responsible fibers. This innovative approach aims to sustainably reduce packaging waste.

Strategic importance for Wago

Logistic hub in Europe

The central location of Sondershausen in the heart of Germany and Europe predestines the location as a “gateway to the world” for Wago. The logistics center serves as the linchpin for global shipping and provides state companies in 80 countries and direct customers. This strategic position enables WAGO to guarantee quick delivery times: Customers in Germany receive their ordered goods within 24 hours, and deliveries generally take 48 to 72 hours across Europe.

Futability and growth

With the expansion of the logistics center, WAGO proactively reacts to the dynamic development of the markets and sets up its distribution logistics capacitive. Dr. Heike Sengstschmid, Vice President Operations, emphasizes: "With our new logistics center, we have created the next milestone in the history of WAGO. We rely on innovation and sustainability to offer our customers first -class products and optimal service".

Diana Wilhelm, Vice President Corporate Logistics, adds: “With the current expansion, we bring the topics of automation and digitization to the next level and make our central warehouse scalable for tomorrow's customer requirements”. This scalability is crucial to keep up with the continued article and corporate growth and continue to ensure a high delivery service degree.

Regional economic importance

Economic engine for North Thuringia

As the largest employer in Northern Thuringia with over 1,000 employees, Wago plays an important role in the economic development of the region. The investment of over 50 million euros in the new logistics center - the largest investment that the company is currently doing - underlines the long -term commitment in the Sondershausen location.

Interaction of production and logistics

The success of the Sondershausen location is largely based on the fitting merging of production and logistics. A large part of the WAGO connecting terminals produced worldwide, including the most famous WAGO connecting clamp in series 221 and the more sustainable green range of series 221, goes from Sondershausen all over the world. This efficient integration is central to the company's international success and the future viability of the company.

Economic strength for the region: Sondershausen benefits from Wago

The opening of the new central warehouse in Sondershausen marks another important milestone in WAGO's history of development. With an investment of over 50 million euros, the company demonstrates its trust in the location and at the same time sets new standards in terms of automation, digitization and sustainability in the logistics industry.

The state -of -the -art technical equipment of the logistics center enables Wago to meet the increasing requirements of the market and to further expand its position as the world market leader in the field of spring clamping technology. At the same time, the company underlines its responsibility towards the environment and future generations with its sustainable approach.

For the region of North Thuringia, the expansion means strengthening economic strength and long -term securing jobs. The close interaction of production and logistics at the Sondershausen location will continue to be a decisive success factor for WAGO and contribute to the further growth of the company.
