Photovoltaic project in Dorfen: starting shot for a greener future
Future technology in action: Dorfen relies on solar and storage
An innovative photovoltaic project is currently being built in Dorfen that drives the energy transition in the region significantly. The “Solarpark Dorfen” near Kaidach is characterized by a modern battery storage technology and a citizen participation model. Construction started in spring 2025 and commissioning is planned for the middle of the year.
Suitable for:
- 83-hectare solar park planned at ex-airfield in Lemwerder-with battery storage and hydrogen power plant
Technical data and performance
The Solarpark Dorfen is built on a almost 3.6 hectare property in the Kaidach district, in the immediate vicinity of the A94 motorway. The system comprises around 4,000 solar modules with a total output of 3.2 megawatt peak (MWP). After commissioning, the system is to generate around 3.2 gigawatt hours of electricity annually, which corresponds to the annual requirement of around 1280 households (with an assumed economical consumption of 2500 kilowatt hours per year). This means that the solar park will be able to cover around ten percent of the total electricity requirement of the city of Dorfen.
The fact that more solar flow is already being produced in Dorfen is particularly noteworthy than is consumed in the urban area. Sebastian Heiß, commercial director of Stadtwerke Dorfen, therefore describes the urban area as a “outfight network”. The new solar park will further improve this positive energy balance.
Innovative battery storage technology
A special feature of the project is the integration of a powerful battery storage with a capacity of around 2,500 kWh (2.5 megawatt hours). This technology enables excess electricity to store during sun -rich hours and to feed it into the network at times without adequate sunlight.
The economic advantage of this storage solution is obvious: According to Leonhard Kriegel from Fenecon, which builds the battery storage, significant price differences on the electricity market can be used. On an exemplary day, a kilowatt hour of solar power only cost 0.04 cents on the electricity exchange at noon, while the price rose to 18 cents around 6 p.m. in the evening-450 times the lunch price. This intelligent storage not only optimally uses the available energy, but also load tips are compensated for and the power grid is stabilized.
Partnership project and operator model
The Solarpark Dorfen is a joint project of several partners. The operating company “Solarpark Dorfen” consists of four business partners: the Stadtwerke Dorfen, Energie Südbayern GmbH (ESB), the company Solea Development GmbH and the Spranger family as area owners. The management lies with Sebastian Heiß from the Stadtwerke Dorfen and Josef Lipp from the ESB.
Citizen participation through subordinated loans
Another innovative component of the project is the possibility of financial citizen participation. The residents of Dorfen and the surrounding area can take part in a so -called subordinated loan at the solar park. The drawing phase for this participation began on March 24, 2025, and there is already a great interest in this offer.
This form of participation was chosen because the establishment of a separate cooperative or other forms of participation with company shares were considered too complex. Instead, a modern crowdfunding model is used, in which the municipal utilities do not accept the loan at a bank, but with interested private individuals. The exact details such as interest rate and maximum participation height are currently being worked out. Comparable projects such as the Solarpark Schwaigern in Baden-Württemberg, for example, offer interest rates of 4.75 percent per year with terms of seven years and investment amounts between 500 and 10,000 euros.

Meaning for the regional energy transition
Dorfen Mayor Heinz Grundner emphasizes the importance of the project for the local energy transition: "With the new solar park, our city is taking an important step for the regional energy transition. I am proud of the pioneering role that Dorfen is taking into account when using renewable energies." He also emphasizes that “electricity from the region for the region” is produced here.
The Solarpark Dorfen is part of a growing number of PV open space systems in the region. For comparison: Another planned project by a Dorfen farmer comprises an area of around 18 hectares and could supply more than 4,000 households with an annual power generation of 10 to 14 million kilowatt hours.
Outlook and future prospects
With the planned commissioning in mid -2025, the Solarpark Dorfen will make an important contribution to local electricity generation from renewable energies. The project embodies several future -oriented aspects of the energy transition: decentralized electricity generation, intelligent storage technology and direct citizen participation.
The combination of photovoltaics and battery memory shows an example of how the challenges of fluctuating electricity generation can be mastered from renewable sources. At the same time, the participation model demonstrates how acceptance for renewable energy projects can be increased by direct financial participation of the local population.
The Solarpark Dorfen can thus serve as a model for similar projects in other communities that make their energy supply more sustainable and at the same time want to strengthen regional added value.
