The idea of using already sealed surfaces for photovoltaics is not new. What was lacking, however, were sufficient incentives for implementation, especially since the alternatives for solar installations on roofs or walls, such as solar walls, solar fences, and solar facades, are virtually inexhaustible.
After North Rhine-Westphalia and Baden-Württemberg introduced the solar obligation for open parking lots for 2022, meaning the obligation to install solar parking lot roofs for 35 or 75 open parking spaces respectively, this is now next on the agenda in federal states such as Schleswig-Holstein and Rhineland-Palatinate.
In Rhineland-Palatinate, plans are underway to introduce mandatory solar carports for new open parking areas with more than 50 vehicles. The state parliament is expected to pass the legislation by the end of September, with implementation planned for 2023. Schleswig-Holstein also intends to finalize mandatory solar carports for new construction projects with more than 100 parking spaces by autumn. Whether this will take effect in 2022 or 2023 remains unclear.

With the start and expansion of paved parking areas to further reduce our environmental impact, the economic aspect comes into play. It also marks the beginning of a gradual revolution in our driving habits, ingrained over decades. Within the next ten years, we will refuel wherever we happen to be shopping, working, vacationing, or living. Instead of driving to a central gas station when our tank is empty, as we have done until now. Will this bring the big oil companies to the forefront, just as it did the tobacco industry starting in 2011, which produced just over 220 billion cigarettes in 2011 and shrank to just over 57 billion cigarettes only nine years later?

Should the generated energy be fed into the grid or stored in energy storage systems? What are the load profiles, the technical connection requirements, the number of charging stations, the vehicle parking time, and ultimately, the total PV output?
