The Stories format introduced in August 2016 was strongly “inspired” by one of the most popular functions of Snapchat and gradually found its way to all social media and messaging applications from Facebook.

All of Facebook's Stories features, i.e. Instagram Stories, WhatsApp Status (which could also be called Stories) and Facebook Stories, have now surpassed Snapchat in terms of daily active users, regardless of where the idea originally came from. The ongoing shift toward stories at the expense of feeds in social media presents a new challenge for Facebook, as it is unclear whether the new format can be used as effectively as the news feed.

"One of the challenges that have marketers is to keep up where the consumers are," said Managing Director Sheryl Sandberg in a profit call at the beginning of the year.
