As part of the Internet of Things, smart living – or smart home technology – is an essential component of digitalization. The topic of smart homes is also gaining increasing importance in the consumer market. A survey by Statista reveals the areas in which users are embracing smart home technology: The most popular are networked lighting products, such as light bulbs that can be controlled via smartphone app. These are followed by virtual assistants and entertainment products, such as speakers. Devices that can make the household more sustainable and secure only made it into the bottom three spots. Experts expect the smart home market to grow strongly in the coming years: Global revenue is projected to increase by an average of 27.5 percent per year until 2022.
