🌐🚀 From returns to same-day delivery: How e-commerce startups master logistics
Ideally, a rapidly growing customer base, an ever-expanding product range, and increasing shipping volumes: when it comes to growth, e-commerce startups quickly reach their logistical limits. But that's not all. Increasing competitive pressure and newly added extras, such as free returns or delivery , further exacerbate the logistical challenges.
Those who fail to invest in efficient structures will quickly fall behind. A functioning logistics system is the key to the business success of online retailers. Therefore, it's essential to optimize processes for maximum efficiency if you don't want to lose sight of costs and, on top of that, alienate customers.
Challenges for online retailers
Operators of online shops, and especially inexperienced e-commerce startups, face three main logistical challenges that they need to address as quickly as possible:
1. Scalability
While modern online shops, and especially innovative startups, are characterized by their flexibility, logistics systems are often the exact opposite: they are difficult to adapt to current developments. However, particularly during the growth phase, logistics processes must be able to scale flexibly. This requires that they are scalable both upwards and downwards and adapt flexibly to changes.
2. Fluctuating demand
Especially for rapidly growing e-commerce startups, the difficulty of predicting demand poses a challenge. “How many of my items should I store, where, and how?” and “With whom and in what way should I ship them to my customers for optimal results?” are crucial questions. A single incorrect answer to these questions can quickly lead to high costs and customer dissatisfaction. Therefore, reliable tools for forecasting future sales volumes are essential.
3. Returns Management
Giving customers the option to return their goods creates significant logistical challenges and increasing costs – which rise even further if returns are free. This can quickly overwhelm the financial resources of startups or rapidly growing companies in sectors with high return rates (e.g., textiles, shoes).
The logistical answer
To drive sustainable growth as a startup, it is therefore essential to invest in flexible and scalable logistics, in addition to ensuring efficient processes. Basically, companies have two options here.
1. Investment in warehouse technology
Inefficient shipping processes pose a significant risk to online retailers, as the detrimental impact of a poorly managed warehouse is often underestimated. This risk is particularly acute when warehouse management fails to keep pace with sales growth. Just because a small retailer initially stored goods on shelves in their basement and shipped them individually from home after receiving an order doesn't mean they have to maintain this system when handling 200 orders a day. As the product range expands, such warehousing quickly becomes unwieldy. This can easily lead to incorrectly assembled items, inadequate packaging, and excessively slow shipping after an order is placed. While this is frustrating for customers, it costs the online retailer real money. Customer satisfaction is paramount, and thanks to major players like Amazon and Zalando, shoppers are accustomed to high-quality shipping. Negative experiences therefore quickly lead to higher return rates and customer churn. This risk can be mitigated with efficient logistics processes and systems. Effective software control combined with automated order fulfillment solutions helps increase picking accuracy, accelerate order picking, and initiate the shipping process more quickly. This prevents incorrect items from ending up in the package or being sent to the wrong recipient. Satisfied customers, a lower return rate, and increased sales will be the result.
2. Outsourcing
Especially for startups that aren't yet able to accurately assess their logistics processes and order volumes, outsourcing fulfillment to an external logistics provider is a reliable alternative. For a pre-calculated price, the online retailer receives warehousing and shipping of their goods, potentially including optional add-ons such as returns or shop management. While this solution is somewhat more expensive than handling the logistics themselves, the retailer eliminates the uncertainties of their logistics. Furthermore, professional handling of the fulfillment process can improve not only delivery quality but also the company's profitability.
Fulfillment refers to the entire process of order processing:
- Warehouse logistics – checking goods upon delivery, safe and professional storage and later provision
- Order processing – picking and preparing orders for shipment, ideally immediately after receipt of the order.
- Shipping – same-day dispatch of goods to ensure fast delivery, ideally the next day
- Returns logistics – careful sorting, inspection, cleaning if necessary and restocking of returned items
- Inventory management system – analysis, coordination and control of goods movements in the warehouse
There are now numerous fulfillment service providers offering their customers a wide range of extras beyond warehousing and shipping, such as shop management or professional photography of the products being listed. With a little research, every online retailer should be able to find the right package for their needs. Efficient logistics processes are absolutely essential for a successful start in e-commerce. This is achieved by relying on high-performance logistics from the outset. At the same time, this lays the foundation early for a productive and growth-oriented future.
