Google Assistant: End of the line for the voice assistant - Gemini takes over

Google Assistant is being replaced by Gemini: What does this mean for users?

Google has officially confirmedthat the Google Assistant, established in 2016, will be completely replaced by the AI-powered chatbot Gemini. The transition is expected to take place sometime in 2025 and will affect almost all platforms where the Assistant has been available. This strategic decision marks a significant shift in Google's AI strategy, as Gemini is positioned as a more powerful, generative AI-based alternative. Users will not have a choice between the two assistants, as the classic Google Assistant will disappear from most mobile devices and will no longer be available for download in app stores.

The era of the Google Assistant is coming to an end

Launched in 2016, Google Assistant quickly became one of Google's core products. It brought natural language processing and speech recognition to a wide range of devices, revolutionizing how people interact with technology. Over the past few years, the Assistant has been continuously developed and rolled out to an increasing number of platforms.

“When we launched Google Assistant in 2016, users were able to get support from Google in a more natural way – thanks to natural language processing and speech recognition,” Google explained in an official statement. Nearly a decade later, however, the technology is undergoing a fundamental shift, driven by generative AI.

This development has forced Google to completely realign its strategy for digital assistants. While the Google Assistant was considered one of Google's most important products a few years ago, Gemini has not only replaced it but has completely overtaken and eclipsed it.

The gradual withdrawal of the Assistant

As early as the beginning of 2025, it became clear that the Google Assistant was being phased out on many platforms. Particularly on smartphones, its functionality was increasingly reduced or transferred to Gemini. Brian Marquardt, Senior Director of Product Management for the Gemini app at Google, explained: “Later this year, the classic Google Assistant will no longer be accessible on most mobile devices and will also no longer be available for new downloads in the app stores.”

This development is not a spontaneous step, but follows a longer-term strategy. Google had already begun at the end of 2024 to gradually transfer many of the functions previously handled by the Assistant to Gemini.

Gemini: The new AI-powered assistant

Gemini is Google's answer to technological advances in artificial intelligence. Unlike its predecessor, Gemini is based on advanced language models and generative AI, giving it significantly more capabilities.

What makes Gemini special?

Google describes Gemini as “a new kind of AI assistant built from the ground up with advanced language understanding and reasoning.” In direct comparison tests, Google found that people are more successful with Gemini because it is better able to understand natural language.

Gemini's capabilities extend far beyond those of Google Assistant. Special features like "Gemini Live" for natural, multimodal conversations and "Deep Research," which transforms Gemini into a personal research assistant, are only possible with this new AI technology. These tools enable significantly more complex and natural interaction than was ever possible with Google Assistant.

Availability and implementation

Since its launch, Google has continuously expanded access to the Gemini app. It is now available in over 40 languages and more than 200 countries. At the same time, the company is working to improve the quality of the everyday Gemini experience, especially for those users who have previously relied heavily on Google Assistant.

The transition: timeline and affected devices

The migration from Google Assistant to Gemini affects almost all platforms where the Assistant was previously available. Google has already presented a rough timeline for this transition.

Mobile devices as first priority

In the coming months, Google will be migrating more and more mobile device users from Google Assistant to Gemini. This affects not only smartphones, but also:

  • Tablets
  • Cars and Android Auto
  • headphones
  • Smartwatches
  • Other devices connected to the smartphone

An update has already been released for Android Auto, which implements Gemini as the central voice assistant and offers a new interface.

Smart home devices follow

Google also plans a complete switch to Gemini for smart home devices. This includes:

  • Smart Speaker
  • Smart Displays
  • TVs with Google TV
  • Other smart home devices

Google plans to announce the exact details of this change in the coming months. Until then, the Google Assistant will continue to function on these devices.

Exceptions for older devices

However, there are exceptions for devices that do not meet the technical requirements for Gemini. The Google Assistant will still be available on smartphones running Android 9 or older versions, as well as on devices with less than two gigabytes of RAM.

Differences and challenges

The switch from Google Assistant to Gemini brings both advantages and potential challenges.

New possibilities through AI

Gemini offers numerous new possibilities through its advanced AI technology:

  • Deeper natural language comprehension skills
  • More context-aware answers
  • Improved integration with various apps and services
  • More advanced multimodality (processing of different input formats)

Google promises that Gemini will increase users' productivity and creativity while also sparking their curiosity.

Potential disadvantages and concerns

However, there are also concerns regarding this change:

  • Consistency in everyday tasks: There are reports that even simple functions like setting timers and alarms sometimes work less well with Gemini than with Google Assistant.
  • Speed: Because Gemini is based on more complex AI models, simple queries may take longer than with Google Assistant in some cases.
  • Data processing and storage: Gemini's enhanced capabilities also raise concerns regarding data privacy.
  • No choice: Users have no choice between the classic Assistant and Gemini – the switch is mandatory.

New activation word?

Interestingly, there are indications that Google might also change the activation word. In recent marketing videos, Google is already using “Hey Gemini” instead of “Hey Google” to activate the Assistant.

However, it is unclear whether “Hey Google” will disappear completely. It is possible that both activation words will exist in parallel to access different assistant functions.

The new AI era at Google

With the replacement of Google Assistant by Gemini, Google is taking a significant step in its AI strategy. The transition reflects the fundamental change that generative AI has triggered in the technology industry.

The migration will be completed across all platforms during 2025, starting with mobile devices. For users, this means a change, but also access to more powerful AI features.

While Google emphasizes Gemini's enhanced capabilities, it remains to be seen whether the new assistant can live up to expectations and fully fill the gap left by the classic Assistant. Consistency and reliability in everyday tasks will be crucial for acceptance, especially for long-time Google Assistant users.

The future of digital assistants at Google clearly belongs to Gemini, and the era of the Google Assistant is drawing to a close. Whether this will ultimately be an improvement or a loss for users will become clear in the coming months.
