The globally installed capacity of renewable energy plants has more than doubled in the last ten years, according to a report by the International Renewable Energy Agency . In Asia, the electricity generation capacity of wind, solar, and other renewable sources has increased by almost 190 percent during this period. In Europe and Eurasia, available capacity in gigawatts rose by around 73 percent – in Germany, the increase was almost 122 percent. Accordingly, the share of renewables in electricity generation in Germany has also risen sharply. In the last quarter of 2020, according to the German Association of Energy and Water Industries (BDEW), they covered more than half of Germany's gross electricity consumption for the first time.
