Name change on Facebook: Meta
At his annual Connect conference (October 28, 2021), Facebook Inc. announced its name change in Meta Inc. The parent company of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp was renamed to meet the recent efforts of the Zuckerberg empire to create the meta verse, a planned virtual reality world that, according to the company, “like a mix of today's social online experiences, sometimes expanded in three dimensions or projected into the physical world.”

The company expanded its presence in virtual reality after acquiring headset maker Oculus in 2014. The recent release of the successful Oculus Quest 2 headset resulted in a three-quarter share of the XR headset market in Q4 2020 and Q1 2021, according to Counterpoint Research
Until the metaverse reality becomes, the focus is still on the company's productive social media platforms. Meta Inc. now has 3.6 billion “monthly active people” across its app family, who defines it as “registered and logged in using Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and/or WhatsApp, who have visited at least one of these family products via a mobile device application or via a web or mobile browser in the last 30 days.”
The company has been reporting on the family products since 2019 and has not released any new user data for Messenger or Instagram since 2017 and 2018, respectively. The last official release for WhatsApp was in the first quarter of 2020, when the platform reached two billion users. Based on Instagram advertising data released in July, Instagram's current monthly active user count may be closer to 1.4 billion.
