Mobile-enabled websites are essential for potential interested parties to search for information. At least since Google started switching to mobile-first indexing. This means that only mobile websites are relevant for Google rankings. The desktop versions are no longer taken into account for the ranking. But mobile-ready is not the same as mobile-ready.

Around 18.5 million German-speaking people stated in a survey in Germany in 2019 that they used the Internet every day to search for information. Compared to the previous year, there were more than six million fewer people. At the same time, the proportion of people who used search engines at least once a week increased.

The duration of internet use has increased steadily in recent years: in 2007, young people were online for around 106 minutes per day; in 2018, the duration had more than doubled. A survey in Germany found that people were more likely to be online several times a day to constantly. Search engines played a smaller role in daily surfing; messenger services were used most frequently.

When searching for information on the Internet, Google is used most frequently; on both mobile devices and desktops, at least three quarters of users entered search terms in this search engine. In November 2019, the desktop search engine market share according to page views from Google was around 88.2 percent. Microsoft Bing is in second place with 5.2 percent.
