The metaverse, or extended reality (XR), is emerging as a growing phenomenon that opens up enormous opportunities for the business world. A survey of 604 CEOs and board members of companies with more than 20 employees in Germany in 2022 revealed a mixed interest in the metaverse and its potential for various business activities. The following section examines the results of this survey in more detail and adds further perspectives to paint a more comprehensive picture of the opportunities and challenges the metaverse presents for businesses.

The survey results showed that 44 percent of respondents each envisioned collaboration in virtual meetings, virtual corporate presence, and employee training as particularly promising areas of application within the Metaverse. This reflects the growing importance of digital workplaces and the need for sophisticated training methods. Virtual meetings in the Metaverse eliminate physical distances and enable innovative, immersive forms of interaction that go beyond traditional video calls. Participants can interact in realistic yet controlled environments, which can lead to increased team collaboration.

🏢 Corporate presence in the virtual space

A company's presence in the virtual realm is more than just a digital business card. It allows for the creation of a holistic brand experience. Customers can experience products and services in a three-dimensional environment, which is particularly interesting for architecture and interior design, but also for retail and other sectors. Employee training also benefits from the immersion and interactivity of the metaverse. Realistic simulations can be used for training, for example in medicine, mechanical engineering, or for soft skills.

🤝 Team building and product presentations in the Metaverse

Nearly as many respondents, 41 percent, see potential in team-building events. This reflects the importance of fostering commitment and a sense of belonging, especially in an increasingly digitalized work environment. Product presentations and sales were considered interesting by 39 and 35 percent of respondents, respectively. This suggests the potential of offering customers interactive and limitless product experiences that go beyond traditional websites or showrooms.

📉 Lower interest in recruitment and services in the metaverse

Interestingly, the figures also show that recruitment (28 percent) and service provision (24 percent) are not seen as primary use cases. This could indicate that the potential of the metaverse in these areas is not yet fully understood. For example, job fairs and interviews can be revolutionized by the metaverse, bringing candidates and companies together in virtual spaces.

🛍️ Marketing and Investments in the Metaverse

Marketing activities are only considered interesting by 22 percent, even though the metaverse offers an ideal environment for innovative marketing campaigns that enable interactive storytelling and personalized customer experiences.

🚫 Skepticism and lack of interest in the metaverse

Direct investments such as the purchase of virtual land are currently in low demand (2 percent), which could indicate that such investments are perceived as speculative or that there is no awareness yet of their potential long-term value.

It is noteworthy, however, that 40 percent of respondents showed no interest in the metaverse. This could indicate skepticism towards the still-nascent technology, a lack of clarity regarding its practical applications, or a fear of investing in an untested field. It is important to note that a certain degree of reluctance is to be expected with the introduction of any new technology.

💡 Indecisiveness and need for information

Fourteen percent of survey participants were unable to provide a specific answer. This underscores once again the need for further education and demonstration of the practical applications of the Metaverse for the business world.

The survey results highlight the interest in exploring the metaverse as a new horizon for businesses, but also the need for more information and practical examples to fully realize its benefits. The business world faces the challenge of finding creative ways to leverage the metaverse while navigating the skepticism and uncertainty that accompany any groundbreaking technology. In the future, case studies from pioneering companies that have developed successful strategies and models could help unlock the metaverse's full potential and convince those who remain hesitant.
