Oakley Meta collaboration: The smart sports glasses of the future will be unveiled on June 20th

Technology transformation in sports: Meta and Oakley jointly develop new smart glasses

Meta and Oakley have officially announced their collaboration on a new smart sports eyewear, which is set to be unveiled on June 20, 2025. The partnership was revealed through a teaser video on a newly created Instagram account called “Oakley | Meta,” featuring the logos of both companies and announcing the “next evolution.”.

The partnership between Meta and Oakley

The collaboration between Meta and Oakley seems quite logical, as Oakley, like Ray-Ban, belongs to the EssilorLuxottica group, with which Meta already collaborates successfully. While the previous Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses were designed more for everyday use, the new Oakley glasses are specifically aimed at athletes, especially cyclists and outdoor enthusiasts.

The June 20th announcement date deviates from the usual schedule, as Meta typically unveils new hardware at its Connect conference in September. This earlier announcement could be a reaction to Google's recently unveiled Android XR initiative, which also targets the smart glasses market.

Technical details of the new sports glasses

According to current information, the new Oakley Meta glasses are based on Oakley's Sphaera model. Unlike the Ray-Ban Meta glasses, where the camera is mounted on the side, the Oakley version will have its camera positioned centrally in the frame. This positioning is said to be particularly advantageous for athletes who want to record videos from a first-person perspective, such as while cycling, skiing, or during other outdoor activities.

The technical specifications are expected to be similar to the current Ray-Ban version, including features like a camera, speaker, and microphone. Whether the glasses will also have a display is still unclear. However, it is speculated that Meta is working on a version with an integrated display for apps and notifications, similar to the concept announced by Google.

The success of the previous Meta Smart Glasses

The collaboration with Oakley follows the remarkable success of the Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses. According to official figures, over two million units have been sold since their market launch in October 2023. One million units were sold worldwide in 2024 alone.

The success of Ray-Ban Meta glasses is not limited to the USA, but extends to Europe, where they have become the best-selling product in 60 percent of Ray-Ban stores in the EMEA region. Given this success, EssilorLuxottica plans to increase annual production capacity to 10 million units by the end of 2026.

Competition in the smart glasses market

The smart glasses market is increasingly becoming a race between tech giants. Google recently unveiled its Android XR glasses, developed in collaboration with brands like Warby Parker, Gentle Monster, and Kering Eyewear. These glasses utilize the Gemini AI model and can recognize objects, eavesdrop on conversations, and provide contextual information.

Other companies are also entering this market. For example, BleeqUp presented the “Ranger” at MWC 2025, a 4-in-1 AI cycling glasses device with an integrated camera, open-ear headphones, and a walkie-talkie function. These developments show that smart glasses are increasingly seen as potential successors to the smartphone.

The future of AR glasses

Meta has ambitious plans for the future of augmented reality. In addition to the Oakley sports glasses, the company is working on other projects such as the “Hypernova,” high-end glasses with a display in the lower third of the right lens that can overlay notifications, photos, or apps directly into the user's field of vision. These glasses are expected to cost around $1,000 and could be released later this year.

Meta plans to launch the “Artemis” in 2027, the first fully functional AR glasses that will operate without a smartphone, running all functions directly on the glasses themselves. The already unveiled “Orion” prototype offers a glimpse into this technology, which will feature a 70-degree field of view, holographic projections, and seven integrated cameras for hand and eye tracking.

The combination of augmented reality and artificial intelligence in these glasses could fundamentally change how we interact with technology and open up new possibilities for work, play and social interactions.
