Logistics planning and logistics consulting

With the ever-increasing importance of autonomous power supply, driven by the EU's Green Deal to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions to zero by 2050, and the growing significance of e-commerce, warehouse optimization is becoming increasingly crucial. While planning, controlling, and coordinating a company's own value chain were previously the primary tasks, process optimization and warehouse efficiency are now taking center stage. This development is driven by the need for flexible and rapid market response. Globalization and e-commerce present both opportunities and challenges. Developments and changes are occurring more rapidly than ever before.

Likewise, the complexity of things has increased. Automation is part of the solution. The other part is gathering information and assessing when and where changes, adjustments, and strategic shifts are necessary and make sense.

Flexibility and speed in complex contexts through automation and warehouse optimization

Automating such processes is only part of the solution. Structures and management must also be examined. But above all, it is important that humans do not lose control and oversight.

Strategies for effective storage – the foundation for successful warehouse management

In goods receiving, the goods are identified, inspected, and prepared for storage in a multi-stage process. Due to the close collaboration between warehouse logistics and suppliers, preliminary information about the incoming goods is usually already available, allowing identification to be carried out by comparing barcodes or similar identifiers. A prerequisite for simplified scanning is the implementation of a numbering or barcode system that is unambiguously interpretable by both parties. Without this, the inspection must be carried out manually.

After the incoming goods have been checked for accuracy and quantity, quality control is carried out. This process varies considerably depending on the type of item delivered and can range from a superficial check to a detailed analysis of individual or even all goods.

Returns management: Managing returns fully automatically – wishful thinking & reality

Managing returns fully automatically – Image: Rost9|Shutterstock.com

Returns cost money, resources, and nerves. That's why online retailers constantly strive to keep their return rate as low as possible. There are plenty of suggestions: more personalization in the shop, more detailed product descriptions with text and images, transparent shipping costs, fast delivery, and attractive packaging are just a few. But even these measures won't prevent a company from having to process no returns at all in the future.

The challenge, therefore, is to find ways to minimize the effort required for returns management. Since the volume of returns is particularly high for large online retailers, despite all preventative measures, extensive automation of the process is a viable option to reduce processing costs. However, there is still a long way to go before this can be fully implemented. Here we present some possibilities that are already moving in this direction.

Planning photovoltaics on warehouses, commercial buildings and industrial buildings

Whether flat roof or pitched roof, all without roof penetrations.

Politicians are getting serious; the new climate protection law, the centerpiece of the Green Deal , is driving measures and developments forward. Legal regulations requiring photovoltaic systems for new commercial buildings are already in effect in some German states.

What does "roof penetration-free" mean?

With roof-penetration-free photovoltaic roof mounting, no holes need to be drilled through the roof or any other interventions made. Sloping gable and shed roofs covered with bitumen or membrane roofing could previously only be installed with great difficulty or at very high cost without roof penetration.

Logistical acceleration of e-commerce and a turbo boost for smart cities

Image: E-Mart @Xpert.Digital

E-commerce, initially ridiculed and neglected, has not only transformed the global world but also the internet into a "local" shopping center, while simultaneously completely changing our habits and expectations.

Without digital platforms, our world as we know it today would be unimaginable. Who still remembers going to the video store when now we simply pick up the remote and access Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+, and all the other online video services? Many people book their trips almost exclusively online and don't even bother going to the local travel agency. And of course, we already order a large portion of our gifts, gadgets, and other accessories online, including from Amazon, eBay, and Google.

Lessons learned from the crisis: Logistics as a key factor

Lessons learned from the crisis: Logistics as a key factor – Image: Production Perig|Shutterstock.com

The COVID-19 pandemic is inevitably accelerating digital transformation, particularly in key industries—those sectors of immense economic importance due to their innovative strength, size, and interconnections with other industries. Logistics is at the forefront of this shift: although many companies have scaled back production, logistics must maintain supply chains and the flow of goods. However, while new work models like working from home and virtual meetings have become widespread in other sectors, the supply chain continues to struggle with digitalization. There simply isn't enough time to adapt all capacities and inventories to the new challenges. This is all the more significant given the shift in consumer behavior, as evidenced by the temporary shortages of numerous items such as toilet paper, disposable gloves, and disinfectants. The interconnectedness of ordering, planning, production, and delivery was disrupted.

Robotics & Automation in the Warehouse

Autonomous gripping robots – Image: studiovin|Shutterstock.com

The megatrends of digitalization, automation, and autonomization will shape logistics processes in the future. Increasingly precise sensors and more powerful software will enable systems to perform the work of human specialists in more and more areas. Is this the beginning of a warehouse without people?

It's not entirely unlikely, as the development is already well advanced. For many people, robots have become indispensable in everyday life. The use of industrial robots in manufacturing has long been standard practice. Logistics, however, has lagged behind. This is primarily because robots are more or less blind and deaf. They don't lack strength, but rather the senses of humans. And to function smoothly in warehouses, future generations of robots will need to master precisely these senses.
