Autonomous power supply: CO2 neutrality with photovoltaics – Learning from Amazon Logistics
Some see the European Green Deal as yet another attempt by the EU to patronize or even harass its citizens. However, few realize that it is actually about providing planning certainty and transparency for industry and investors to ensure a green growth strategy. The EU's ambitious goal is to become the world's first climate-neutral continent by 2050.
But there are other ways, and there are other reasons worth considering. At online retailer Amazon, shipping and fulfillment costs have skyrocketed in the last ten years: total logistics costs increased more than twentyfold between 2009 and 2019.

Following the decisions on phasing out coal and the Climate Protection Act of 2019, electricity prices are expected to rise by approximately 40% by 2030. Current financing models are based on the current situation and do not take future developments into account. This means that as electricity prices increase, solar power systems become increasingly worthwhile.
Since January 2021, a CO2 tax has been in effect on gasoline, diesel, heating oil, and gas. Those who do not drive sustainably or heat their homes sustainably must expect significantly higher and increasing costs.

Micro-Hub – The key to a brilliant solution?
Logistics is constantly evolving. One challenge follows another: warehouse optimization, process acceleration, cost efficiency, CO2 reduction, automation, and competitive pressure. E-commerce and Amazon are the driving forces behind this development. Amazon is not only one of the world's largest online retailers, but also a driver and innovator of many technological advancements that wouldn't exist today without it. The journey from an online bookseller in 1994 to the e-commerce giant it is today is breathtaking.
The only question is when the next level, the plateau, will be reached, where things will consolidate and appropriate adjustments can be made to the development?

Why optimize the warehouse?
Today's digitized workplace, thanks to innovative control software and automated, networked systems, offers ample potential for continuous optimization of warehouse operations. After all, what good is the best and most modern warehouse if the processes behind it don't function properly?

Another way to optimize warehouse operations is to establish and expand a buffer stock. Buffer stocks are designed to ensure supply in case of potential shortages, such as during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The advantages of efficient warehouse management, especially in e-commerce, are therefore as follows:
- Increased productivity in the warehouse leads to better competitiveness
- Lower costs due to reduced staffing needs, higher utilization of existing space, and resource-efficient operation of the systems
- High customer satisfaction through fast and precise delivery and shipping
- Optimal space utilization due to high-density storage
- Overview & security thanks to modern software control
- Scalability and flexibility through modularly expandable storage systems

The materials handling and intralogistics sector is part of mechanical engineering and deals with the organization, implementation, and optimization of internal material flows using technical systems and services. The intralogistics sector includes manufacturers of lifting equipment and cranes, forklifts, and warehouse technology (e.g., buffer storage), as well as software providers and complete system suppliers.
Between two high-bay racks there is an aisle for the fully automated storage and retrieval system (stacker crane or ASRS – Automated storage and retrieval systems), which is necessary for the automated loading and unloading of the high-bay racks.
