The logistics industry largely consists of freight forwarders, warehouses, and transport companies, and has become increasingly important since the end of the 20th century due to the distribution of production across numerous locations (globalization). In Germany, it is now the third largest industry in terms of the number of employees.

Economics and engineering independently address the various aspects of logistics. These include, for example, supply chain management as well as traffic and material flow engineering. The corresponding sub-disciplines have now merged into a new interdisciplinary science. Organizations often have dedicated departments that deal with logistics. In the military, this is the logistics unit; in hospitals, hospital logistics; and in companies, logistics departments with varying scopes of responsibility.

The size of cities worldwide is constantly increasing, fueled by the millions of people who migrate from rural areas to urban centers each year. However, this increasing urbanization is placing growing demands on governments, businesses, and city administrations to manage the rising demand for goods and infrastructure in these centers.

But the supply gaps in rural areas must also be closed. This challenge is primarily directed at strategic logistics. However, it also presents an opportunity to deliver genuine added value and benefits for both companies and society through digitalization and Logistics 4.0.

The future of logistics: It is increasingly becoming the core element of optimized processes across a wide range of disciplines

Automating such processes is only part of the solution. Structures and management must also be examined. But above all, it is important that humans do not lose control and oversight.

The future of logistics centers

Logistics centers are not a key industry, but they are certainly part of the most important infrastructure of our expanding economic region. Despite some difficulties at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, logistics has so far coped remarkably well with the crisis. It has had to manage a great deal: rapidly increasing transport volumes due to e-commerce, as if it were already Christmas; mitigating delays in just-in-time production, i.e., production synchronized with demand; and absorbing and coordinating the disruption of the supply chain as effectively as possible.

With over 1,000 articles published, we cannot present all topics here. Therefore, you will find a small selection of our work here, and we would be delighted if we have sparked your interest in learning more about us:

Intralogistics 4.0 and the intelligent material flow systems of material flow engineering

The materials handling and intralogistics sector is part of mechanical engineering and deals with the organization, implementation, and optimization of internal material flows using technical systems and services. The intralogistics sector includes manufacturers of lifting equipment and cranes, forklifts, and warehouse technology (e.g., buffer storage), as well as software providers and complete system suppliers.

Intralogistics refers to the logistical flow of materials and goods that takes place within a company's premises. The term was defined to distinguish it from the transport of goods outside a factory, for example, by a freight forwarding company.

Planning photovoltaics on warehouses, commercial buildings and industrial buildings

Whether flat roof or pitched roof, all without roof penetrations.

Politicians are getting serious; the new climate protection law, the centerpiece of the Green Deal , is driving measures and developments forward. Legal regulations requiring photovoltaic systems for new commercial buildings are already in effect in some German states.

What does "roof penetration-free" mean?

With roof-penetration-free photovoltaic roof mounting, no holes need to be drilled through the roof or any other interventions made. Sloping gable and shed roofs covered with bitumen or membrane roofing could previously only be installed with great difficulty or at very high cost without roof penetration.

Smart Factory: Effective intralogistics for Industry 4.0

The term Industry 4.0 is generally defined as the close integration of industrial production with state-of-the-art information and communication technology. Many aspects of these Industry 4.0 principles are already being implemented in intralogistics, particularly regarding the automation and networking of warehouse systems.

Modern logistics goes far beyond simply packaging and transporting goods. Speed, precision, flexibility, and connectivity have long been crucial competitive factors, as customers want to access inventory and be informed about its availability anytime, anywhere. Networking and integration, along with digital information management—these core requirements of Industry 4.0—have therefore already arrived in the intralogistics sector.

Automation techniques involve the skills to design, create, develop and manage machines and systems, e.g. factory automation, process automation and warehouse automation (e.g. buffer storage).

Automation technology is the integration of standard engineering elements. It involves the automatic control of various control systems for the operation of different systems or machines, reducing human effort and time while increasing accuracy. Automation engineers design and maintain electromechanical devices and systems, ranging from high-speed robots to programmable logic controllers (PLCs).
