The term “Internet of Things” (IoT) describes the networking of electronic devices with the Internet. This does not include PCs, tablets and smartphones. Examples of the IoT are intelligent thermostats, traffic control systems or street lighting. According to a current investigation by Gartner, 3.8 billion devices are currently connected to the Internet, of which 1.8 billion in the consumer sector. The analysts assume that the IoT will become an everyday appearance by 2020 - then 25 billion connected devices.
