Internet of Things devices are hardly widespread (2016)

On Friday, a DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack of unprecedented scale partially crippled the websites of PayPal, Spotify, Amazon, Twitter, and other providers. According to initial analyses, networked devices, primarily cameras and digital video recorders, were used in the attack on the web service provider Dyn. This highlights that data privacy may not be the biggest problem of the Internet of Things (IoT). Theoretically, any internet-connected device can be manipulated by hackers and thus weaponized, whether it's a baby monitor or a refrigerator. At least in Germany, the infrastructure necessary to address such a threat may still be in need of improvement, according to a Deloitte survey . The survey indicates that the prevalence of IoT consumer hardware in Germany remains low, as our graphic also illustrates.
