Over two-thirds of residential buildings constructed in 2020 are heated with renewable energy.

Just over two-thirds (68.8%) of the residential buildings newly constructed in Germany in 2020 are heated entirely or partially with renewable energy. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), this share increased slightly again compared to 2019 (67.2%). In 2015, it was 61.5%. For the first time in 2020, renewable energy was used as the primary energy source, i.e., predominantly for heating, in more than half (50.5%) of the 112,935 new residential buildings (2015: 38.0%).

Renewable energies for heating include heat pumps (geothermal energy or environmental thermal energy), solar thermal energy, wood, biogas/biomethane and other biomass. Conventional energy sources include oil, gas and electricity. District heating is another energy source that is not counted as a renewable or conventional energy source in statistics.

Heat pumps are the most commonly used type of heating system in new residential buildings

The most important primary energy source for heating was heat pumps. They were used as the primary energy source in 45.8% of new residential buildings (2015: 31.4%). Heat pumps are considered renewable energy sources and are used to generate energy from geothermal and ambient heat sources.

Installation of gas heating systems continues to decline.

Natural gas, the conventional energy source, was used as the second most important primary energy source in 39.0% of new buildings. The share of gas heating systems as primary heating has declined steadily in recent years. In 2015, it was still at 51.5%. District heating was the primary heating source for 8.0% of new residential buildings (2015: 7.8%). In contrast, oil heating systems were used as the primary heating source in only 776 new residential buildings, representing just 0.7% of new buildings (2015: 1,195 and 1.1%, respectively).

Solar thermal energy and wood are the most important secondary sources of heating energy.

When an additional (secondary) energy source was used in new residential buildings, the preferred renewable energy sources were solar thermal energy (14.5%) and wood (13.2%).

Heating with photovoltaics?

Using your own electricity for space heating isn't as absurd as it might seem. Since the government-mandated feed-in tariff for feeding self-generated electricity from solar panels into the public grid is steadily decreasing, the idea of expanding the use of this generated and unused electricity for other purposes isn't far-fetched. This is especially true considering that solar panels are becoming increasingly affordable and efficient. With ever-decreasing purchase costs and increasingly efficient electric heating systems, energy efficiency is on the rise. Good, modern electric heating systems have a high efficiency rating, which, when combined with a solar system, can be financially worthwhile, especially when considering the constantly rising electricity costs from the public grid. However, that's not all there is to it. It's not always worthwhile and requires careful planning. Using a battery storage system also increases profitability, as it bridges the gap between electricity generation and heat consumption. In fact, it is only a matter of (a short) time before photovoltaic heating systems become a serious alternative to conventional heating methods.
