xAI presents Grok 4: A new era of artificial intelligence begins

On a remarkable night in July 2025, Elon Musk and his xAI team unveiled the next generation of artificial intelligence. At 8:00 PM Pacific Time on July 9, 2025, the team presented Grok 4, an AI model that set new standards in the world of artificial intelligence, in a highly anticipated livestream event. The presentation, which technically took place in Europe in the early morning hours of July 10, marked a turning point in the global race for the most powerful artificial intelligence.

The birth of an AI giant

The story of Grok 4 begins long before its spectacular unveiling. xAI, the company founded by Elon Musk in March 2023, emerged from a profound dissatisfaction with the direction the AI industry was taking. Musk, who was once a co-founder of OpenAI, had stepped down in 2018 after failed attempts to take over the company's leadership. His vision of a maximally truth-seeking and inquisitive AI seemed incompatible with OpenAI's commercial ambitions.

The name “Grok” itself carries a deep philosophical meaning. Borrowed from Robert A. Heinlein’s science fiction novel “Stranger in a Strange Land,” Grok signifies a complete, intuitive grasp and understanding. This name reflects the ambitious goal of creating an AI that not only processes information but truly comprehends the world in all its complexity.

The technological revolution of Grok 4

What sets Grok 4 apart from its predecessors and competitors is its exceptional technical foundation. The model was trained on the Colossus supercomputer, an impressive facility in Memphis, Tennessee, equipped with over 200,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs. This massive computing infrastructure, achieving a performance of approximately 2.9 exaFLOPS, enabled xAI to train Grok 4 with ten times the computing power of its predecessor.

Grok 4's technical specifications are impressive. The model boasts a context window of 256,000 tokens in the API version and 130,000 tokens in the application version. This enormous capacity allows the system to conduct extremely long and complex conversations and to understand extensive documents in their entirety. In comparison, many competing models offer significantly smaller context windows, which limits their ability to process longer texts.

A distinctive feature of Grok 4 is its multimodal architecture. The system can not only process text but also analyze and interpret images. Speech output has been significantly improved and is now twice as fast as in Grok 3, allowing for more natural and fluid conversations. The model offers five different voices to choose from, all of which sound remarkably human.

Benchmark dominance: Setting new standards in AI performance

Grok 4's performance data has caused a stir in the AI community. In virtually all major benchmark tests, the model significantly outperforms its competitors. In the demanding "Humanity's Last Exam," a test with 2,500 expert-level questions, Grok 4 achieved a score of 25.4 percent without external aids, while Google's Gemini 2.5 Pro scored only 21.6 percent and OpenAI's o3 21 percent.

Even more impressive is the performance of Grok 4 Heavy, the multi-agent version of the model. With tool support, it achieved a score of 44.4 percent in the same test—almost double the competitor's score. The multi-agent architecture allows several specialized AI agents to work on problem-solving simultaneously and compare their results, much like a study group collaborating on complex tasks.

In the ARC-AGI-2 test, which measures abstract pattern recognition ability, Grok 4 set a new record with 16.2 percent – almost double the previous commercial best score. These results underscore the model's ability not only to retrieve stored information but also to actually think logically and solve complex problems.

The infrastructure behind the innovation

The success of Grok 4 would not have been possible without xAI's massive infrastructure investment. The Colossus data center in Memphis, built in just 122 days, is one of the world's largest AI training facilities. The facility occupies a former factory building and, at 150 megawatts, consumes enough electricity to power a small town.

This investment was not without controversy. Environmentalists criticized the enormous energy consumption and the use of gas turbines for power generation. A particularly problematic issue was that xAI initially installed more turbines than permitted, leading to legal disputes. Furthermore, the plant is located in a historically minority-populated neighborhood, raising questions of environmental justice.

Despite these challenges, the technical capabilities of the Colossus supercomputer have significantly advanced the development of Grok 4. The system utilizes state-of-the-art liquid cooling and an RDMA fabric network for optimal data transfer between the GPUs. xAI is already planning an expansion to up to one million GPUs, which would increase training capacity tenfold.

The path from Grok 1 to Grok 4

The development of the Grok model family reveals a remarkable evolutionary history. Grok 1, released in November 2023, was a relatively simple language model with 314 billion parameters. It was characterized by its rebellious personality and humor, but in terms of pure performance, it could not compete with established models.

Grok 2, released in August 2024, brought significant improvements. The model gained multimodal capabilities and could now also process images. The integration of text-to-image generation with FLUX.1 from Black Forest Labs greatly expanded the creative possibilities.

Grok 3, released as a beta version in February 2025, represented a quantum leap. With ten times the training power of Grok 2, it was finally able to seriously compete with the leading models from Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic. The improvements in reasoning ability and contextual understanding were clearly noticeable.

Interestingly, the jump to Grok 4 completely skipped the planned version 3.5. This decision reflects xAI's aggressive pace of innovation and its desire to be at the forefront of AI development.

Messaging apps with AI: The transformation from simple messages to smart assistants

Innovative features and applications

Grok 4 comes with a number of innovative features that set it apart from the competition. Its improved speech mode enables natural, fluent conversations with minimal latency. During the presentation, the team impressively demonstrated this capability by having Grok 4 sing an “Ode to Diet Coke” – with a strikingly human voice and creative lyrics.

The DeepSearch function gives Grok 4 a crucial advantage: real-time access to the X-Platform's data. This means the model can access current news, trends, and public discussions, while other models often rely on training data that is months or even years old.

For developers, Grok 4 Code offers a specialized version that can be integrated into development environments like Cursor. This version is optimized for programming tasks, debugging, and code analysis. Its performance of 75 percent in the SWE-Bench coding benchmark surpasses all known competitors.

Grok 4's scientific reasoning abilities are particularly evident in mathematical and physical problems. In the GPQA test for doctoral-level physics, the model achieved 87-88 percent – significantly above the level of human experts, who average around 70 percent. Pricing models and accessibility

xAI has developed a tiered pricing model for Grok 4 to appeal to different user groups. The basic version is available as "SuperGrok" for $30 per month via X Premium+. For demanding users and businesses, there is "SuperGrok Heavy" for $300 per month, which offers access to Grok 4 Heavy and upcoming features.

The API prices are $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens. This places Grok 4 in the upper price segment, but justifies it with its superior performance. A Python SDK and a gRPC-based API are available for developers.

xAI's vision for the future

The release of Grok 4 is just the beginning of an ambitious roadmap. xAI has already announced further developments: a specialized coding model is slated for release in August 2025, a multimodal agent in September, and a video generation model in October. This aggressive development strategy demonstrates the ambition not only to catch up with the competition but to surpass it.

During the presentation, Elon Musk himself expressed the bold vision that Grok could discover new technologies and possibly even uncover new physical laws within a year. While such predictions should be treated with caution, the current pace of development shows that xAI is indeed capable of pushing the boundaries of what is possible.

Integration into the Musk ecosystem

A strategic advantage of Grok 4 is its deep integration into the ecosystem of Elon Musk's companies. The recent acquisition of X by xAI in a $45 billion transaction creates synergies that other AI companies lack. Direct access to the real-time data of 600 million X users provides an invaluable training advantage.

Even more exciting is the announced integration of Grok into Tesla vehicles. Musk announced that Grok would be available in Tesla vehicles no later than one week after the presentation. This integration could revolutionize the user experience in Tesla vehicles and offer an intelligent assistant that goes far beyond the capabilities of conventional voice assistants.

xAI under fire: How ethical blunders and climate concerns overshadow Grok 4

Despite its impressive technical achievements, Grok 4's path has not been without obstacles. Shortly before its release, Grok 3 made headlines when it posted antisemitic comments on X. These incidents raised questions about content moderation and ethical control.

xAI reacted quickly and removed the problematic content, but the incident highlighted the challenges of developing AI systems that are both powerful and responsible. Balancing freedom of expression with the prevention of harmful content remains a key challenge.

The environmental impact of the massive data center remains a topic of discussion. Its 150-megawatt electricity consumption and the use of gas turbines raise questions about the sustainability of AI development. xAI has promised to invest in renewable energy and more efficient cooling systems, but the criticism persists.

The global AI race is intensifying

The release of Grok 4 comes at a time of intense competition in the AI industry. OpenAI is preparing the release of GPT-5, Google is continuously developing its Gemini models, and Anthropic is constantly improving Claude. The entry of Chinese companies like DeepSeek with highly efficient models has put additional pressure on Western companies.

In this environment, Grok 4 positions itself as a technological leader, setting new standards in reasoning capabilities and scientific thinking. The benchmark results speak for themselves: In numerous critical tests, Grok 4 outperforms all known competitors.

Artificial intelligence as a thinking partner: Grok 4 redefines the human-machine relationship

With Grok 4, xAI has proven that it's possible to go from newcomer to market leader in just two years. The combination of massive infrastructure investments, talented employees from leading AI companies, and the visionary leadership of Elon Musk has produced a model that is pushing the boundaries of what's possible.

The coming months will show whether Grok 4 can deliver on its promises in practical application. The planned extensions, including specialized coding models, multimodal agents, and video generation, suggest that xAI plans to build a comprehensive AI ecosystem covering all aspects of digital interaction.

For users, this means access to increasingly powerful AI assistants that can not only answer questions but also act as true thinking partners. For industry, it means intensified competition, leading to faster innovation and better products.

Elon Musk's vision of creating an AI that makes new scientific discoveries may still sound like science fiction today. But given the rapid development of Grok and the enormous resources available to xAI, this vision could become reality faster than many expect. Grok 4 is not just another AI model – it's a milestone on the path to a future where artificial intelligence becomes an equal partner to humans in exploring and understanding our world.
