The UK leads European advertising revenue for social media

The UK generated the highest revenue from social media advertising in 2018, according to the Digital Market Outlook analysis and forecast. The United Kingdom brought in approximately $2.8 billion in revenue solely from social media advertising, excluding membership fees and premium charges.

The business model of social media networks is largely based on revenue from ad generation. Alongside other scandals unrelated to advertising or marketing, social media sites like Facebook are increasingly under scrutiny regarding who they sell advertising to and how they share user data with advertisers.

The UK generated more than double the revenue of Germany, the second-place finisher. The combined revenue from social media ads in Germany and France does not achieve the same advertising impact as in the UK. Overall, mobile social media advertising currently outperforms desktop advertising and is expected to remain the dominant medium for advertisers.
