Next-level AI: What to expect from GPT-5 this summer

GPT-5 announced: Advances in cognitive ability and performance

The upcoming release of GPT-5 marks a significant milestone in the development of artificial intelligence. According to the latest information, OpenAI has adjusted its release strategy, with GPT-5 now planned for summer 2025. Recent announcements indicate substantial improvements in reasoning abilities, multimodal processing, and usability that go beyond previous models.

Current development status and timeline

OpenAI released GPT-4.5 (codename “Orion”) on February 27, 2025, which serves as a transitional model before the introduction of GPT-5. GPT-5 was originally announced for the end of May 2025, but OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced a change to these plans on April 4, 2025.

The new strategy calls for the release of the reasoning models o3 and o4-mini in the coming weeks, followed by GPT-5 “in a few months.” This delay is due to several reasons:

“Integrating all components into a unified system has proven more difficult than initially anticipated. At the same time, the additional development time allows us to make GPT-5 significantly better than we initially thought possible,” said Altman. Furthermore, OpenAI needs time to ensure sufficient computing capacity to meet the “unprecedented demand.”.

From GPT-4.5 to GPT-5

GPT-4.5 represents the last model without integrated chain-of-thought technology. In contrast, GPT-5 will fully integrate these thinking capabilities. Sam Altman described the development as “unifying the o-series and GPT-series into a single, more powerful system.”.

Technological advances and performance improvements

The technical specifications of GPT-5 indicate an impressive performance leap. Based on industry information, the following improvements are expected:

Model size and computing power

According to current estimates, the model size and computing power will undergo a massive expansion of model parameters. GPT-4 has approximately 1 trillion parameters (1,000B), while GPT-5 is expected to increase this to 5 to 10 trillion parameters (5,000B–10,000B). The dataset size will grow from about 10 trillion tokens for GPT-4 to an estimated 40 to 100 trillion tokens for GPT-5. This development will require a significant increase in training hardware, from 25,000 A100 GPUs for GPT-4 to 250,000 to 500,000 H100 GPUs for GPT-5, which will increase training costs from approximately US$100 million to US$1.25 to US$2.5 billion. This 10- to 20-fold increase in computing power allows GPT-5 to work significantly faster and more precisely, and to process longer and more complex queries with better logic and fewer errors.

New features and capabilities

GPT-5 will not only be more powerful, but also more functionally versatile. The most important innovations include:

System 2 thinking and improved logic skills

Unlike previous models, which relied primarily on System 1 thinking (fast and intuitive), GPT-5 will increasingly implement System 2 thinking – a slower but more rational way of thinking that breaks down complex problems into smaller steps. This enhanced thinking ability is supported by OpenAI's internal "Strawberry" technology, which improves mathematical, logical, and problem-solving skills.

Comprehensive multimodal capabilities

GPT-5 will offer seamless integration of text, speech, images, and video. This advanced multimodal processing enables:

  • Speech-to-speech functionality for more natural conversations
  • Improved image processing and generation
  • Support for video content
  • Coherent processing of different data types

As Altman mentioned in an interview with Bill Gates, the integration of audio had “a much stronger response than expected” and in GPT-5 it will be “possible to push this much further”.

Simplified user experience

A key goal in the development of GPT-5 is to simplify the user interface. Altman confirmed that the model “will know when to think long and hard and will generally be useful for a very wide range of tasks.”.

The previous need to switch between different models is eliminated. Altman commented: “We hate the model picker too.” Instead, GPT-5 will automatically choose the best approach, whether for quick answers or in-depth analytical considerations.

Personalization and adaptability

GPT-5 will offer significantly improved adaptability. Users will be able to customize the system to their preferences, communication styles, and external data sources such as email or calendars.

Reduced hallucinations and improved reliability

Another significant advantage is the expected reduction in “hallucinations”—cases in which AI chatbots fabricate information. The improved logic and reasoning processes should help the model better assess the plausibility of its answers.

Summer 2025: What GPT-5 promises users

GPT-5 represents a significant step towards OpenAI's goal of general-purpose artificial intelligence. The integration of advanced reasoning capabilities, multimodal functions, and improved usability could make AI more accessible to a wider range of users.

Although GPT-5 is not yet true AGI (Artificial General Intelligence), it could fundamentally change how businesses and knowledge workers use AI in their daily lives. With the expected improvements, both professionals and everyday users could place more trust in AI.

While we wait for the release in summer 2025, the gradual rollout of the o3 and o4 mini models in the coming weeks will already give a taste of the capabilities that will be fully integrated into GPT-5.
