In the first half of 2020, Germany generated approximately 42 percent of its total electricity feed-in from wind and solar power plants. The graphic shows that this puts Germany in a leading global position, even surpassing Australia, China, and the USA.

According to the climate think tank Ember, wind and solar energy accounted for around ten percent of global electricity generation in 2020. This represents a significant step forward compared to the meager share of just five percent five years prior. Since 2015, renewable energies have wrested a five percent market share from coal, which reached 33 percent globally in 2020. This fossil fuel is being gradually replaced by renewable energies in most countries around the world; however, in some countries, such as Germany, this process is happening faster than in others.
