The online clothing trade is booming. Despite the apparent omnipotence of the online department store Amazon, the retailers with the highest sales in Germany include companies such as Zalando from Berlin and the well-known mail order company Otto from Hamburg, which is also represented several times through its subsidiaries Bonprix, Baur and About You.
As our infographic with data from ecommerceDB.com shows, the top ten mail order companies also include the online stores of Lidl and Tchibo, which actually specialized in the food and coffee trade, but now successfully serve the so-called non-food division.
When the postman brings fashion
Online retail has been competing with stationary retail for some time now with high growth rates. This trend has also reached the clothing sector. As the infographic based on the 2018 consumption and media analysis shows, online fashion shops have significantly increased in popularity among buyers. While 2.3 million people bought clothing primarily online in 2014, the number increased to 3.86 million in 2017. This corresponds to growth of around 66 percent. However, traditional stationary clothing stores are still the most popular: in 2017, they were the preferred place to shop for fashion for around 41 million people.
