Only two percent of the companies surveyed for a Bitkom Research analysis are working with blockchain applications – only among large companies with 500 or more employees does the percentage reach double digits. Those German companies that are intensively engaged with blockchain or are already using it generally see themselves as pioneers in this field, but believe that Germany as a whole is lagging behind in blockchain technology. According to Bitkom President Achim Berg, the core principle of blockchain is "that data transactions are not stored centrally on a server, but decentrally in the blockchain. That means: distributed across a network of computers." According to the study, Switzerland, Malta, and the USA are considered international leaders in this field.
