🧊🥕🥬🥦 The challenges of cold chain logistics: Ensuring the freshness and quality of food while protecting the environment
🧊 Solution and example for deep-freeze storage: 👨🍳📦🌡️ Fresh food logistics and refrigerated logistics present a demanding challenge in the supply chain.
🌡️ Frozen storage and cold chain logistics undoubtedly represent one of the most demanding challenges in the supply chain. The primary objective is to maintain an uninterrupted cold chain to guarantee the quality and safety of perishable foods. This is particularly important in a world where the demand for frozen products is constantly increasing. Consumers now demand year-round availability of products that were traditionally only available seasonally – a fact that further increases the complexity of cold chain logistics.
❄️ The ever-increasing popularity of ready meals like frozen pizza and the rise of vegetarian and vegan products reflect a significant shift in eating habits and the associated demands for freshness. The days when seasonal products like strawberries were only available during the summer months are over. Advanced refrigeration technologies and logistics processes have made it possible to supply consumers with these products year-round. However, while the technological capabilities of cold chain logistics have evolved, the challenges of warehousing and the often difficult working conditions have remained essentially the same. These unattractive aspects of the industry contribute to a shortage of skilled workers, particularly in areas that still rely heavily on manual labor and where a fully automated warehousing solution has not yet been implemented.
🏭 The demands placed on cold chain logistics are multifaceted. They range from providing suitable storage conditions and adhering to strict hygiene standards to ensuring efficient and sustainable logistics. To meet these demands, companies must invest in innovative technologies that improve both product quality and working conditions. These include, for example, modern refrigeration systems that guarantee a consistent temperature, as well as software solutions that enable seamless monitoring of the supply chain. Additionally, working conditions must be designed to be attractive to skilled workers, as this is the only way the sector can remain competitive in the long term.
♻️ It is also important to emphasize that refrigerated logistics plays a crucial role in reducing food waste. Precisely controlled temperatures and optimized transport routes keep food fresh for longer, thus reducing the waste rate. In an era where sustainability is increasingly important, refrigerated logistics can be considered a key factor in a more environmentally friendly food supply.
🌍 Cold chain logistics is a dynamic field that must constantly adapt to new market conditions and consumer expectations. The industry faces the challenge of finding innovative solutions that not only ensure the freshness and quality of products but also improve working conditions and contribute to sustainability. It is an industry with significant potential for technological advancements, and the ability to adapt to these changes will be crucial to the future success of businesses.

🏭 The Hohsui Corporation: Innovative pioneer in frozen food logistics 🧊

❄️ Capacity expansion and secure location: 140,000 tons at nine strategic locations in the greater Tokyo area
Hohsui Corporation has established itself as a leader in frozen food logistics through the innovative construction of the Ichikawa Distribution Center. With the construction of this state-of-the-art facility, the company has significantly expanded its refrigeration capacity and now boasts a total of 140,000 tons of refrigerated storage capacity across nine strategically located sites in the greater Tokyo area. This capacity is crucial for meeting the demands of customers who want their frozen food and globally sourced seafood to be in safe hands.
🌬️ State-of-the-art cold storage with 8,700 storage units at -25 degrees Celsius
The heart of the center is the -25 degree Celsius cold storage facility, equipped with over 8,700 storage units. This enables optimal storage of a wide range of products – from frozen vegetables, which account for half of the monthly turnover of approximately 4,500 tons, to frozen goods and livestock, and other chilled products.
🔧 Flexible mobile high-bay warehouse for high storage density and earthquake resistance
A particularly innovative feature is the mobile high-bay warehouse, which spans the second through fourth floors. This system allows Hohsui Corporation to achieve high storage density while simultaneously ensuring product safety during earthquakes, as the racks are mounted on rolling carts. This design flexibility also enables efficient management of storage space, with barcodes on the racks allowing for precise inventory tracking and management.
🚚 Precisely coordinated logistics processes for efficiency and immediate shipping
The logistics processes at the Ichikawa distribution center are precisely coordinated. From the inspection of incoming goods on the ground floor, through the transport of products to the various levels of the warehouse, to temporary storage for immediate shipment – all processes are geared towards efficiency. For distribution to the convenience stores, the picking process for each store is coordinated directly from the store's central office, with all data being fed into the center's warehouse management system after shipment.
🌍 BCP measures for continuity and safety under all circumstances
Among the extensive Business Continuity Plans (BCP) implemented at the Ichikawa distribution center is the use of seismic isolators to protect the facility against the effects of earthquakes. Additionally, as a preventative measure against tsunamis, the ground floor has been raised and critical equipment has been installed on the roof. An emergency power supply protects the center from the consequences of power outages. These measures reflect the company's firm commitment to ensuring business continuity and the safety of stored products under all circumstances.
🌡️ Temperature control and air quality: Safe storage at a consistently low temperature
Toshio Sekiguchi, the director of the Ichikawa Logistics Center, emphasizes that, in addition to structural integrity and safety measures, special attention is paid to temperature control and air quality. Positive pressure is maintained in the cargo handling area to prevent the ingress of warm outside air, thus ensuring a consistently low temperature and product quality.
“One of the unique features of the Ichikawa Distribution Center is its implementation of numerous BCP measures, including the use of seismic isolators as a precaution against earthquakes, raising the ground floor and installing critical equipment on the roof as a precaution against tsunamis, and installing an emergency power supply to protect against power outages. Mobile racking systems offer high storage density and are also considered earthquake-resistant due to the trolleys beneath them. In addition to temperature control in the cargo handling areas on each floor, we maintain positive pressure in the ground floor cargo handling area to prevent warm air from entering and rigorously monitor temperature and quality.” – Toshio Sekiguchi, Director, Ichikawa Logistics Center
💡 Hohsui Corporation: Technological innovation, security awareness, and efficient inventory management
The Ichikawa distribution center is thus a prime example of the fusion of technological innovation, security awareness, and efficient inventory management. It demonstrates how Hohsui Corporation is not only revolutionizing the storage and distribution of frozen products, but also strengthening its role as a trusted partner for its customers through exceptional risk prevention and quality control measures.
