Miniaturization and progress: Smart Glasses as a new companion
Smart Glasses technology is currently experiencing an impressive development in which the integration of advanced displays and the miniaturization of the components are the focus. The trend is clearly towards everyday glasses, which are not only technologically demanding, but also aesthetically appealing and comfortable. These developments mark a decisive change from pure gadget to practical everyday accompaniment.

Display technologies and integration in modern smart glasses
Innovative display solutions
The integration of displays in smart glasses has developed considerably. Current models rely on different technologies to project information directly into the user field of vision. Particularly noteworthy are micro-LED displays, which are characterized by their energy efficiency and high image quality. For example, Meta develops AR glasses that integrates a display at the lower edge of the right glasses glass, for example, which allows the user to see the displayed information with the right eye.
The XReal Air, on the other hand, uses two 1080p-OLED panels that serve as the second monitor for USB-C or HDMI devices and can project a virtual screen with up to 201 inches into the user's field of vision. This technology enables different AR levels to be realized: from simple image transmission to virtual desktops to advanced room computing, in which 3D objects are shown in the real environment.
Innovative positioning and integration
An interesting approach comes from Halliday, whose smart glasses use a 3.6-millimeter display module on the edge of the right glasses to project a 3.5-inch text field into the field of vision. This solution avoids using the glasses as a display area and focuses on a discrete edge enrichment of the field of vision. The display is invisible to outsiders, which protects the user's privacy.
The company Tooz has developed another innovative solution: a micro-LED display that is integrated directly into the glasses. This display is slightly offset next to its own focus, so that the user has to actively look at it to read the data. A special advantage of this approach is that the display can be used in glasses of different strengths, both for wide and short-sighted people.
Miniaturization and comfort: the way to everyday suitability
Weight reduction and ergonomic design
Miniaturizing the components plays a crucial role in the acceptance of smart glasses in everyday life. Modern models strive to reduce weight and adapt the design to classic glasses. For example, the XReal Air weighs only 79 grams, which makes it particularly pleasant to wear. The Halliday Smart Glasses go one step further and weigh only around 35 grams, while visually remind of classic horn glasses with a wide, black frame.
Material innovations for improved wearing comfort
The choice of materials is crucial for the wearing comfort of smart glasses. Charming has developed a glasses frame for the Smart Glasses from TDK that optimizes comfort by using titanium and z-titan. The front part of the frame consists of light, high-strength titanium, while the temples are made of Z-Titan-a flexible material with excellent elasticity that reduces the side pressure on the head. This innovative choice of material represents a significant progress compared to the frequently used plastic frames, which are easy, but can cause pressure points in the temporal area.
Compact optical systems and battery life duration
The integration of compact optical systems is another important aspect of miniaturization. Projects such as that of Almer Technologies GmbH in collaboration with the Switzerland Innovation Park Biel/Bienne aim on the development of compact AR glasses, in which an appealing design is combined with energy-saving electronics and resilient mechanics.
The battery life is also an important factor for suitability for everyday use. For example, the Halliday glasses offers a usage time of up to eight hours with a single load, while comparable models such as the Ray-Ban meta glasses only create about four hours. This improved battery life is partially achieved by avoiding a camera within the framework, which also reduces the concerns about privacy.

The current market and future developments
The Smart Glasses market develops quickly and diversified. Meta has already sold about one million smart glasses in 2024 and is now planning a high-end model with the Hyprenova project that is to be launched with a price of more than $ 1,000. These glasses aim not only to be fashionable accessories, but also to offer practical functions such as photography, navigation and the display of notifications.
Future development will probably include an even greater integration of artificial intelligence. Hallidays glasses, for example, offer AI functions such as the translation of language up to 40 foreign languages, which is then displayed as text on the display, as well as automatic summaries of spoken lectures. This AI integration could significantly expand the benefits of smart glasses and make it a variety of assistants in everyday life.
An important step towards everyday suitability
The current hardware development and the design of Smart Glasses show significant progress in the direction of everyday devices. The integration of different display technologies directly into the field of vision of the users marks a significant step away from simple glasses with only audio or camera functions. At the same time, miniaturization and improved materials enable lighter, more comfortable designs that resemble more normal glasses and look less chunky.
The combination of advanced display technology, improved wearing comfort and longer battery life could mean the breakthrough for smart glasses as a mainstream technology. With the integration of AI functionalities and the further refinement of the design, smart glasses are increasingly becoming practical companions that seamlessly integrate our interaction with the digital world into everyday life.
