Solar fence systems for trade, industry, logistics and commerce

As the energy transition progresses and prices for solar modules continue to fall, further applications for solar energy generation are becoming interesting.

This statistic shows the average selling price of solar modules from Canadian Solar Inc. between 2011 and 2020. In 2020, the average selling price of solar modules from the Canadian manufacturer was just under US$0.25 per watt. The source refers to this as the "average selling price." Values prior to 2016 were taken from publications of the previous year.

Solar fence potential

A company site is a mostly privately owned, non-public area where facilities, operating premises, administrations and business headquarters of companies are located.

In Germany, there is no general regulation regarding the fencing of company premises. EC Directive 89/654/EEC contains some regulations concerning traffic routes and hazardous areas on company premises. Accordingly, unauthorized employees must be prevented from entering areas of company premises where there is a risk of falling objects. Furthermore, there is a fencing obligation under the general duty of care for public safety for parts of facilities that may pose a particular danger to life and limb, such as those with exposed live parts, a risk of falling, or similar hazards (§ 5 para. 1 no. 1 BImSchG).

Furthermore, a fence also offers protection against industrial espionage and economic theft.

According to a study, nearly 30% of industry is monitored by a security service, and the vast majority of these businesses operate on fenced premises. This also applies to the transport and logistics sector, which accounts for 14.5%. It can therefore be assumed that well over 50% of the German economy maintains fenced areas, representing enormous potential for photovoltaic systems such as solar fences and solar walls.

A fence also offers solar power potential for autonomous power supply.

There are no overviews, figures, or studies on the number and size of fenced company premises. Therefore, the solar power potential for solar fences and solar walls can only be indirectly evaluated based on the share of the security sector.

Previously, company roofs and the flat roofs of warehouses and production halls were of interest for solar power systems .

In addition to solar carport options for company parking lots, which will be launched in Baden-Württemberg from 2022 onwards with a solar obligation, solar fences and solar walls are now also becoming interesting from an economic point of view.

Highway fence protection and noise barriers

Another potential application for solar fences lies in the fencing systems along highways. In Germany, there are guidelines for protective fences (wildlife fences) along federal highways to keep out wild animals. In some sections of the highway, there are also noise barriers, which could in turn be optimized as solar walls.
