Every second person calls via WhatsApp etc.
Messengers have already replaced SMS as the transmission method for text messages, and traditional telephone calls are also facing competition: According to a survey by the industry association Bitkom, every second user of WhatsApp etc. also makes calls with their messenger.
Even more popular, at 70 percent of those surveyed, is sending pictures, videos, gifs or links and of course the actual writing (85 percent). Messengers are also used for less popular contacts: 17 percent say they have blocked contacts in the past three months. In addition, most people use mobile chat programs primarily privately: only ten percent say they have contacted companies via messenger.
Every second person sends voice messages
Generation Y, Z and generally “these young people” don’t like to talk on the phone. They prefer to write endless messages in messenger apps with lots of emojis and smileys - that seems to be the common prejudice. And in fact: people don't make as many calls anymore, but they don't necessarily type either. For many, voice messages are the communication tool of the moment.
As the graphic shows, two thirds of 14 to 29 year olds have sent voice messages in the last three months - the number decreases as they get older. Overall, every second respondent in the study by the digital association Bitkom sent voice messages via messenger.
Sign language emojis
More than two-thirds of Messenger users use emojis when writing their messages. The biggest fans of the small symbols and symbols are 14 to 29 year olds: 86 percent said in a survey by the industry association Bitkom that they use smileys, flags or animals in their messages.
Most respondents find emojis funny, and almost one in two find the symbols helpful. However, for ten percent it is the other way around: they find the colorful symbols misleading, another five percent are simply annoyed. According to the survey, on average two emojis are used per message.
WhatsApp usage continues to increase
While SMS is going downhill in Germany, the trend in WhatsApp usage is pointing in the opposite direction. It can be safely assumed that there is a connection. Currently, 65 billion messages are sent via Messenger every day. That's another ten billion more than in the summer of 2017.
