Öko-Institut calls for more courage when it comes to climate goals: Significantly more is possible in the EU

The Berlin think tank is convinced that the EU-wide climate targets for 2030 could be more ambitious. The Öko-Institut Agora recently produced a study that came to the conclusion that greenhouse gas emissions in the European Union could fall not only by the estimated 40 percent, but even by 55 percent.

The background for this study is the European debate about a climate protection target that can – and must – be much more ambitious. We would like to decide on this objective by the end of the year and present it at the climate conference in Glasgow in 2021. Accordingly, industry and the energy sector should reduce their greenhouse gases by 59 to 63% compared to 2005.

Prevent drastic measures

In order to achieve a higher climate target, the measures leading to this will have to be adapted accordingly. In principle, the climate protection architecture within the EU, as it currently exists, would be ideally suited to adjusting the targets upwards, says Patrick Graichen from Agora Energiewende. Above all, it will be important that the EU states transform their economies towards climate neutrality, because this is the only way to prevent starting too late and more drastic measures becoming necessary.
