Can teenagers not live without WhatsApp, Snapchat, and Instagram? Maybe. But there's one online service that 12- to 19-year-olds absolutely cannot live without: when they open an app or browser, it's usually for YouTube. No other service is as popular with teenagers as the video portal.
In the annual JIM study (Youth – Information – Media), respondents were asked to name their three favorite services. Netflix was the big winner compared to the previous year: the streaming service increased its share from eight to 18 percent. The biggest loser, as the graphic shows, was Facebook: the social network fell from 15 to six percent and is therefore hardly relevant for very young people anymore.
The Media Education Research Network Southwest has been surveying young people between the ages of 12 and 19 about their media use annually since 1998 for the JIM study.
