The share of energy generated from renewable sources worldwide rose from 11 percent in 2017 to more than 12 percent in 2018. According to a report by the Frankfurt School of Finance & Management and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), this translates to 1.8 gigatons less carbon dioxide being released into the atmosphere. Total investment in this sector also increased by two percentage points to almost $280 billion in 2017. As our infographic shows, developing countries only overtook developed countries in 2015. Last year, the gap widened to $74 billion.
