Nearly half of the respondents in a Bitkom survey published at the end of last year stated that they had been victims of internet crime in the previous twelve months. 54 percent of those affected incurred costs. Nationwide, the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) damages amounting to €71.8 million – however, this is likely only a fraction of the actual financial consequences of online crime. The most frequent offense is so-called computer fraud – 74 percent of cybercrime cases fall into this category.
