Internet Explorer was once the undisputed number 1 among browsers. But that was quite a while ago. In 2012, according to StatCounter pushed into second place by Chrome, and since 2016, it has only managed to rank third. The company reacted in 2015 by launching a new web browser, Edge. However, Microsoft has been unable to build on the success of Internet Explorer, as the chart shows. Now, rumors are circulating that Edge is being discontinued. Developers are said to be working on a new browser based on Chromium—ultimately based on the code of the global market leader of its major competitor, Google.
