(Still?) Ad-free and innovative: ChatGPT challenges Google in e-commerce

Shopping Update: ChatGPT takes personalized product recommendations to a new level

On April 28, 2025, OpenAI announced a major shopping update for its AI chatbot ChatGPT, expanding its integrated web search with powerful e-commerce capabilities. Users now receive personalized product recommendations with images, reviews, and direct links to retailers. With this strategic move, OpenAI directly challenges Google's dominant position in online shopping by offering an ad-free alternative based on structured metadata. The update is available to all ChatGPT users worldwide and initially focuses on the fashion, cosmetics, household goods, and electronics categories.

There is no separate, dedicated link exclusively for "ChatGPT Shopping". The new shopping features are integrated directly into the regular ChatGPT web interface. You can easily access them via the official ChatGPT website:

https://chat.openai.com/ or alternatively https://chatgpt.com/

There, you can chat with ChatGPT as usual and ask specifically for product recommendations, price comparisons, or shopping tips. ChatGPT will then display relevant products, images, reviews, and purchase links directly within the conversation. There is no separate shopping portal or special URL just for the shopping function – the feature is part of the regular ChatGPT user interface and is available to all users (even without registration).

Features and user experience of the new shopping update

Personalized product recommendations and user interface

ChatGPT's new shopping update allows users to receive product recommendations through natural conversation. Instead of scrolling through numerous search results, users can ask specific questions and receive tailored suggestions. OpenAI demonstrated the feature with a query for an espresso machine under $200 that closely resembles Italian coffee flavor, after which ChatGPT presented several suitable models with photos, prices, and retailer links.

The new user interface is similar to Google Shopping in some ways, but differs in key aspects. When users click on a product image, a sidebar appears with additional information, including various retailers offering the product. The "Ask about this" feature is particularly useful, allowing users to ask follow-up questions about specific products.

Availability and integration into existing models

The shopping update is being implemented in the standard AI model GPT-4o and will be available to all ChatGPT users worldwide – regardless of whether they are using the Pro, Plus, or free plan, or whether they are using the service without registering. OpenAI intends to make the feature available to all approximately 500 million users quickly.

The new shopping feature complements ChatGPT's existing web search, which has enjoyed great popularity since its launch last year. According to the company, the search tool was used over one billion times in the past week alone.

Strategy behind the update: A challenge for Google

Competitive advantage through ad-free results

A key difference between ChatGPT's shopping feature and Google's shopping search lies in the presentation of results. While Google Shopping relies heavily on paid advertising, allowing businesses to pay for more prominent product placement, OpenAI emphasizes that ChatGPT's product suggestions are ad-free.

Adam Fry, the manager responsible for ChatGPT's search product, told the tech blog "The Verge": "They are not ads. They are not sponsored." The shopping results are independently determined and based on structured metadata from third-party providers, which includes pricing information, product descriptions, and ratings.

Potential impact on affiliate marketing

One important aspect discussed during the rollout of the shopping update is its potential impact on affiliate marketing. Websites that publish product reviews typically receive a commission when readers purchase products through their links.

If ChatGPT now provides product recommendations based on reviews from various sources without requiring users to visit those websites, affiliate partners could lose revenue. Fry stated that OpenAI would “explore different approaches to this problem” but did not mention any specific solutions, emphasizing that the initial focus is on high-quality recommendations.

Further innovations and future developments

Additional search improvements

In addition to the shopping features, OpenAI is introducing further improvements for ChatGPT search:

  1. Autocomplete for search queries, similar to Google Search
  2. Display of trending search queries submitted by other users
  3. Integration with WhatsApp allows users to access more up-to-date information directly through the messenger

Memory function for personalized recommendations

For Pro and Plus users, OpenAI also plans to integrate the memory function into the shopping feature. The chatbot will then be able to use previous conversations for even more precise product recommendations. For example, if a user has expressed a preference for certain clothing styles or brands in previous conversations, ChatGPT will take this into account in future product recommendations.

However, this feature will not be available in the EU, presumably due to data protection concerns.

Cooperation with Shopify

There are indications that OpenAI may be partnering with Shopify. Reports indicate that elements such as "Buy Now" buttons, product reviews, shipping details, and direct links to the Shopify checkout process have been discovered in ChatGPT's code. This could mean that an even more seamless shopping experience will be possible in the future, allowing users to purchase products directly within ChatGPT without leaving the platform.

OpenAI's strategic push into e-commerce

The shopping update for ChatGPT marks a significant step in OpenAI's strategy to expand beyond pure text generation and penetrate Google's core business. With over one billion web searches per week and 400 million weekly active users, OpenAI has a solid foundation to gain a foothold in the online shopping sector.

The ad-free approach and the emphasis on personalized, conversational product recommendations could appeal to users frustrated by Google's ad-heavy search results. At the same time, the question arises as to how OpenAI intends to generate long-term revenue from this feature if the company neither displays advertising nor receives commissions on purchases.

Competition between OpenAI and Google is likely to intensify further in the coming months, with the shopping update appearing to be just one part of a broader strategy by which OpenAI is challenging various aspects of Google's business model.
