A solar power system in a solar field converts the electromagnetic spectrum of our sun into electricity "directly" on extremely thin semiconducting layers. The core element is the solar cells (grouped into modules), which, through the bombardment of photons from the solar radiation, create a separation of positive and negative charges. The power generated in this way can either be used directly, stored in solar batteries, or fed into the public power grid using inverters.
Solar fields as power generation facilities?
According to a survey, ground-mounted solar power plants the most popular type of electricity generation in the neighborhood, as solar fields are essentially solar parksconsisting of large photovoltaic solar arrays. While wind turbines enjoy 47% acceptance, solar fields lead the way with 62%.
Monitoring systems for solar power plants in solar fields
Solar power plant monitoring systems serve multiple purposes. They are used to track trends within a single photovoltaic system, identify faults or damage to solar cells, compare a system's performance against design specifications, or compare PV systems at different locations. This range of applications requires various sensors and monitoring systems tailored to the intended purpose.
Ground-mounted installation on solar fields and solar parks
two main types of mounting systems for ground-mounted photovoltaic installations: fixed mounting systems and tracking systems. With fixed mounting systems, a steel or aluminum frame is anchored in the ground by driving piles into the earth or bolted to concrete blocks, depending on the type of soil. The angle of the modules cannot be changed after installation.
Tracking systems follow the sun's path to ensure optimal module alignment at all times. This increases energy yield, but also raises investment and operating costs for maintenance and the energy required for tracking. A distinction is made between single-axis tracking – either horizontal only (the panel follows the sun's position from east to west from sunrise to sunset) or vertical only (the south-facing panel rotates according to the sun's altitude above the horizon) – and dual-axis tracking – horizontal and vertical. This increases yields compared to fixed mounting: in Central European latitudes, by approximately 20% with single-axis tracking and by over 30% with dual-axis tracking.
Another form of ground-mounted PV is floating installation on bodies of water, where the modules are mounted on plastic floats. The cooling effect of the water increases the yield. However, the investment costs are 20–25% higher than with conventional installation. The Fraunhofer Institute estimates the potential for floating PV systems alone at 55 GWp on 25% of the areas destroyed by lignite mining if these areas are flooded.
Funding opportunities for solar fields and solar parks
Under the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG), solar power systems are eligible for subsidies if they meet certain requirements. There are three scenarios in which EEG subsidies may be considered:
What are the requirements for receiving EEG funding?
