☀️ The year 2023: A milestone for solar energy in Berlin 🌱

The year 2023 represents a significant milestone in the history of solar energy use in Berlin. With the installation of 10,308 new solar systems, which were counted by December 15th, Berlin has not only set a new record, but at the same time a pioneering sign of its use renewable energies. The capacity of 72.7 megawatts/peak fed into the power grid exceeds all previous values and more than doubles compared to the previous year.

📈 Development and statistics

To put these numbers into perspective: The previous years 2020 to 2022 recorded an increase of 1,528, 1,883 and 3,704 systems with the associated capacities of 18.8 megawatts/peak, 26 megawatts/peak and 32.9 megawatts/peak. This development shows a clear trend – the energy transition in Berlin is gaining momentum.

🔋 Balcony solar: balcony power plants and subsidies

A decisive impetus for this upswing came particularly from the so-called balcony power plants. Supported by the SolarPLUS program of the Senate Department for Economic Affairs, Energy and Enterprises, which was funded with a grant of 500 euros per system from February 2023, the funding campaign achieved an impressive response. By December 15 of that year, 6,737 funding applications had been received, of which 4,263 were approved. Only 350 applications were rejected, mainly because the systems were purchased before the application was submitted and therefore did not meet the eligibility criteria.

🎙️ Political statements

Franziska Giffey, the Berlin Senator for Economics, Energy and Enterprises, commented on the development as a “turnaround in solar expansion”. At the end of 2023, Berlin had over 25,000 solar systems with more than 10,000 newly installed units last year alone - almost tripling compared to the previous year. These figures are an expression of Berlin's ambitions to be at the forefront of solar expansion nationwide. With the Solarcity master plan, the city is pursuing the goal of generating at least 25 percent of the energy generated in Berlin from solar power by 2035 - an ambitious but decidedly realistic project.

💰 Investments and funding policy

In order to achieve this goal, the funding for solar expansion was increased to 28.5 million euros for the years 2024 and 2025 in the double budget. In addition, the advisory services offered by the solar center at Ostbahnhof were improved and the SolarPLUS funding program was further developed. The 500 euro subsidy for balcony solar systems, introduced at the beginning of the year, attracted a lot of interest. In view of rising energy costs, this offers direct relief for citizens.

🌆 Large projects and corporate participation

In addition to private households, large project installations, such as those on the hall roofs of the Berlin trade fair company with 20,000 panels on 50,000 square meters, are also of central importance in order to continuously increase the proportion of solar energy. These projects act as groundbreaking examples and inspire further projects.

🏢 Potential in companies and the public sector

However, there is still some momentum from the economy. Berlin companies only use three percent of the existing solar potential on their roofs. There is untapped potential here that offers great opportunities for both the economy and the climate. The same applies to the public sector, which must also contribute to accelerating expansion, especially for federal, state and district buildings. This year, obstacles such as issues relating to monument law were addressed.

👩‍🔧 Labor market and training

By digitizing processes and increasing personnel capacities, Stromnetz Berlin GmbH is making crucial contributions to the continuation of the solar boom despite the shortage of skilled workers in the field of climate professions.

🎓 Education and campaigns

This leads us to a critical point: the shortage of skilled workers in the industry. An effective energy transition requires qualified personnel to plan and install solar systems. In response to this, Berlin will push ahead with the establishment of a climate workshop for training in climate professions. A broad-based solar campaign is also planned for the coming year to get young people in particular excited about the opportunities in the solar industry and thus offer them prospects for future-proof jobs.

🔧 The solar craft

The commitment to climate protection and sustainability is reflected not least in the growing importance of the solar trade - an industry that not only promises a climate-friendly energy future, but also a secure professional future for those who want to be part of this movement.
