Augmented Reality Picking Solution for HNU Logistics Lab

Augmented Reality Picking Solution for HNU Logistics Lab

Pick by HoloLens – Augmented Reality Picking Solution for HNU Logistics Lab

Under the direction of Professor Dr. Oliver Kunze, Professor of Business Administration with a focus on resource risk management at Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences, possibilities are being explored for using digital future technologies such as augmented reality in logistics practice.

In this context, Phaenom GmbH, the technical partner of Xpert.Digital, a solutions provider and developer of digital solutions for businesses, will soon be investigating the impact of using HoloLens glasses on order picking processes in warehouses as part of a university project. For this purpose, the smart glasses have been equipped with specially developed picking software, the user-friendliness of which will be tested and optimized during the project. Kardex Remstar, an intralogistics manufacturer from Neuburg an der Kammel specializing in the production of automated storage and retrieval systems, has been secured as a research partner.

The starting point for the augmented reality solution will be equipping students with Microsoft's HoloLens smart glasses . Their biggest advantage compared to previously used solutions (such as hand scanners or pick-by-light support) is that they are completely self-contained, flexible, and mobile, and therefore hardly restrict the user's freedom of movement. In addition, the system can be continuously supplied with software and status updates via remote connection.

For this project, students will initially participate in a test series picking easily confused products without digital support, relying solely on printed pick lists. In the comparative study, they will then be supported in their work under identical conditions using an augmented reality solution. After the tests are completed, the results regarding picking times and access precision will be compared. The usability of HoloLens headsets will also be examined.

The testers can use the HoloLens to access a wide range of information about their respective work assignments and to select from pending assignments. A later version of the tested HoloLens picking software will also allow users to independently create picking orders and select the most efficient method for each order from different picking scenarios.

Using the integrated transmission technology of the HoloLens, fellow students can follow their classmates' picking process live on screen. This significantly increases the transfer of knowledge and experience and simultaneously lays the foundation for broad learning success.
