Pick by HoloLens – Augmented Reality picking solution for the HNU logistics laboratory

Under the direction of Professor Dr. Oliver Kunze, professor of business administration with a focus on resource risk management at Neu-Ulm University, is researching ways to use future digital technologies such as augmented reality in logistics practice.

In this context, Phaenom GmbH, the technical partner of For this purpose, the data glasses were equipped with specially developed picking software, the user-friendliness of which will be tested and optimized during the university project. The intralogistics manufacturer Kardex Remstar from Neuburg an der Kammel, which specializes in the production of automated storage and retrieval systems, was won as a research partner.

The starting point of the augmented reality solution will be equipping students with HoloLens data glasses from Microsoft . Its biggest advantage compared to previously used solutions (e.g. hand scanners or pick by light support) is that it is completely self-sufficient, flexible and mobile, and therefore hardly affects the user's freedom of movement. In addition, the system can be permanently supplied with software and status updates via a remote connection.

Suitable for:

For the project, students in a series of tests will initially pick products at risk of confusion without digital support and only using printed pick lists. In the comparison study, they are then supported in their work under the same conditions by an augmented reality solution. After the tests have been completed, the results are compared with each other in terms of picking times and access precision. For this purpose, the usability of the HoloLens glasses is examined.

The testers can access a wide range of information about their respective work assignments HoloLens In a later version of the tested HoloLens picking software, the user will also be able to create picking orders independently and select the most effective method for the respective order from among different picking scenarios.

Using the HoloLens' integrated transmission technology, fellow students can follow their fellow students' picking process live on the screen. In this way, the transfer of knowledge and experience is significantly increased and at the same time the basis for broad learning success is laid.
