Artificial intelligence (AI) has now entered the mainstream. According to a recent Bitkom survey, 75 percent of Germans know what the term means. Roughly the same number have already used a simple application based on AI.
“In just a few years, many products and services will be equipped with machine intelligence or even shaped by it,” says Bitkom President Achim Berg. “We must do everything we can to make the best possible use of AI’s potential for the digital society.” The majority of the approximately 1,000 people surveyed for the study also see opportunities for AI in many areas of life, as the Statista infographic shows. These include, for example, reducing traffic congestion, making work easier, and solving crimes more quickly.
At the same time, skepticism towards thinking machines remains high. 78 percent fear that AI opens the door to abuse of power and manipulation. The fear that AI will one day turn against humanity or even disempower human beings is also widespread.
