Apple's robotics plans: What the new job postings reveal

Smart Home: Is Apple now attacking with robots?

Apple is currently working on at least two significant robotics projects:

  1. A mobile device that can intelligently follow the user: This device will be equipped with state-of-the-art sensors to navigate autonomously through living spaces. The goal is to simplify users' everyday lives through intelligent assistance.
  2. A smart table lamp: This lamp, whose design is reminiscent of the Pixar mascot Luxo Jr., was recently featured in a research video. It can respond to hand gestures, interact with users, and even project tutorials or information onto a nearby wall.

It's important to note that this information is based on reports and speculation. Apple itself has not yet made any official announcements regarding its robotics plans.

The development of these devices is based on state-of-the-art artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning to enable seamless interaction with users.

Organizational structure and leadership

Robotics development at Apple is driven by two central teams:

  • The hardware engineering group “Home Labs”: This team focuses on the physical development of the robots and their integration into the Apple product ecosystem.
  • The AI special projects team is led by Kevin Lynch: Lynch, Apple's vice president of technology, previously led the now-discontinued "Apple Car" project and was instrumental in developing the health tracking features of the Apple Watch.

The close collaboration between these teams enables a seamless integration of hardware and software, which is a crucial factor for the success of robotics initiatives.

Apple's Strategic Vision for Home Robotics

Apple is pursuing a long-term strategy with its robotics projects. Beyond simply developing new hardware, the focus is on seamless integration into the existing Apple product ecosystem. By incorporating Apple Intelligence and Siri, the robots are designed not only to operate autonomously but also to connect seamlessly with other devices such as iPhones, iPads, and the HomePod.

The long-term goal is the development of:

  • Humanoid robots: These are currently still in the research phase, but could play a role in Apple's portfolio in the medium term.
  • Table-based robots: Apple is reportedly working on a smart home hub robot that will serve as a central control device for smart home systems.

Specifications of the planned table robot

This device, developed under the code name “J595”, could have the following properties:

  • A large, iPad-like display mounted on a thin robotic arm
  • 360-degree rotation and tilt capability to ensure optimal visibility
  • Controlled by Siri and Apple Intelligence, enabling voice-based interaction
  • Features such as FaceTime calls, home monitoring and control of smart household appliances

Apple plans to position this table-based robot in the high-end market segment and is aiming for a sales price of around $1,000.

Mobile robotics assistants

In addition to this table-based robot, Apple is also working on a mobile device that can autonomously follow the user. This concept is reminiscent of existing smart assistants like robot vacuum cleaners, but goes far beyond them. The Apple robot could:

  • Automatically recognize shopping lists and connect to Apple Pay
  • Place orders independently
  • Avoid obstacles in the home and move around safely
  • Sync with other Apple devices and answer calls

Such mobile robots could represent a revolution for everyday life at home by supporting users in a variety of scenarios, from ordering food to interacting with smart household appliances.

Challenges and market entry

Although the developments appear promising, Apple faces some challenges:

  • Technological challenges: Developing autonomous, intelligent robots is complex. Apple must overcome both hardware and software hurdles.
  • Cost factor: Highly developed household robots require expensive components, which will be reflected in the end-user prices.
  • Data protection and security: Apple places great importance on data protection. The implementation of cameras and sensors in household robots must ensure that no sensitive user data is compromised.
  • Competition from other tech giants: Companies like Amazon (with Astro), Google, and Tesla are also working on smart household robots. Apple needs to differentiate itself with innovative features.

According to reports, Apple's first robotics product could be released between 2026 and 2027. A phased rollout is conceivable, with the desktop robot appearing first, followed by a mobile assistant.

Apple's ambitions in home robotics

Apple's robotics initiative has a clear vision: household robots should not only be practical everyday helpers, but also seamlessly integrate into the Apple product ecosystem. With intelligent AI, powerful hardware, and innovative design, Apple could take a leading role in this field.

Should the reports prove true, Apple could usher in a new era of smart home appliances with its robotics projects – offering high-quality, innovative solutions for the premium market.
