Alibaba generated $30.8 billion in sales on Singles' Day 2018. This means China's largest online retailer surpassed its own previous year's result by $5.5 billion. By comparison, e-commerce sales in the US during the 2017 Thanksgiving weekend (Thanksgiving Day, Black Friday, Cyber Monday) totaled $7.3 billion. Singles' Day is a day for single people, celebrated annually on November 11th. Eight years ago, Alibaba began attracting customers with heavily discounted special offers on this day. Many competitors have since followed suit.
