Massive leap in logical thinking: Gemini 3.1 Pro leaves OpenAI's top model far behind

Much more than a small update: Why Gemini 3.1 Pro is turning the AI world upside down

Google has surprised the tech world with an unexpected bombshell: Gemini 3.1 Pro was released without much prior announcement. What at first glance appears to be an inconspicuous interim update due to its discreet version number, turns out upon closer inspection to be a massive technological leap that shakes up the existing AI hierarchy.

Especially in complex logical reasoning and agent-based search, the new model sets entirely new standards. It not only doubles the performance of its predecessor but also significantly outperforms the top models of its fiercest competitors, Anthropic and OpenAI, in current benchmarks. Beyond its impressive theoretical specifications, Gemini 3.1 Pro shines in practice with outstanding capabilities in creating complex visualizations and conducting independent internet research. Coupled with its direct integration into the Chrome browser, Google makes its intentions unmistakably clear: superior core intelligence is to seamlessly integrate into the daily lives of billions of users and businesses. But how meaningful are these raw numbers really, and what does this advance mean for the global AI competition?

More than just an interim update: Why Google's surprising model leap is turning the AI hierarchy upside down

On February 18, 2026, Google unexpectedly released Gemini 3.1 Pro worldwide, surprising the AI industry. What the version number disguises as a modest point update turns out, upon closer inspection, to be a massive leap in performance. Google itself describes the model as an upgrade designed for tasks where a simple answer isn't enough. The improved core intelligence, which also underpins the breakthroughs of Gemini 3 Deep Think, updated just a week earlier, is now intended to be brought to everyday applications.

The Benchmark Revolution

The raw numbers speak for themselves. On the ARC-AGI-2 benchmark, a demanding test procedure for abstract logic tasks and pattern recognition, the Gemini 3.1 Pro achieves 77.1 percent correct solutions. Its direct predecessor, the Gemini 3 Pro, managed only 31.1 percent, representing a doubling of performance within a single model generation. Even more significant is the comparison with the competition. Anthropic's current top model, the Claude Opus 4.6, achieves 68.8 percent, while OpenAI's GPT-5.2 reaches 52.9 percent.

These figures mean that Google, with Gemini 3.1 Pro, has achieved a clear lead over its two main competitors in logical reasoning. The gap to Anthropic is 8.3 percentage points, and to OpenAI it is a staggering 24.2 percentage points.

Gemini 3.1 Pro also shows impressive progress in agent-based search, as measured by the BrowseComp benchmark. At 85.9 percent, it significantly surpasses the 59.2 percent of its predecessor. This metric is particularly relevant because it measures the model's ability to independently conduct web searches and solve complex information queries.

The necessary caveat regarding benchmarks

It would be intellectually dishonest to leave these benchmark results uncritically evaluated. As with all AI models, the legitimate question arises as to what extent the models were optimized for the specific test procedures. New models are trained, among other things, on these tests, which is why they perform particularly well in them. Therefore, the results are not necessarily directly transferable to one's own experiences and practical application.

Nevertheless, its predecessor, Gemini 3, had already proven to be a particularly popular model, impressing in practical use and reportedly putting pressure on OpenAI. In this case, the benchmark leaps appear to correlate with real-world improvements in application.

Availability and pricing structure

Google is rolling out Gemini 3.1 Pro simultaneously across a variety of platforms. Developers gain access via the Gemini API in Google AI Studio, the Gemini CLI, the agent-based development platform Google Antigravity, and Android Studio. Enterprises can use the model through Vertex AI and Gemini Enterprise. End users gain access through the Gemini app and NotebookLM, with the latter being exclusive to paid Pro and Ultra subscribers.

The pricing structure follows a token-based model. For search, Google offers 5,000 prompts per month free of charge; after that, it costs $14 per 1,000 queries. Caching costs $0.20 per million tokens as input, and cache storage costs $4.50 per million tokens per hour. However, the model is still in preview, and Google plans to make further improvements based on user feedback, particularly regarding ambitious agent workflows.

The competitive strategy classification

The release of Gemini 3.1 Pro must be seen in the context of increasingly intense competition. OpenAI has recently focused on releasing models for developers, notably Codex 5.3 along with a new platform. Anthropic had previously released Claude Opus 4.6, which boasts improved coding capabilities. Sonnet, the mid-range model in the Claude family, was also updated to version 4.6.

Google is responding to this competitive pressure with Gemini 3.1 Pro by leveraging its strength in reasoning. While OpenAI and Anthropic have primarily focused their models on coding capabilities and developer tools, Google is pursuing a broader intelligence enhancement that ranges from code generation and data analysis to text processing.

Practical performance beyond the numbers

Beyond abstract benchmarks, Google demonstrates the improved performance of Gemini 3.1 Pro with concrete application examples. The model can create code-based visualizations and animations that are significantly more complex and aesthetically pleasing than those of its predecessor. Lunar landscapes with twinkling stars and visible craters, moving flocks of birds that can be controlled via hand tracking—generative tasks like these are solved at a new level of quality.

For businesses and developers, this means that Gemini 3.1 Pro can handle a significantly wider range of tasks without human intervention. The improved core intelligence enables the model to analyze complex problems in a more structured way and to recognize new patterns more reliably. For enterprise environments, where the reliability and consistency of results are business-critical, this leap in quality is of considerable economic importance.

The Chrome integration factor

Simultaneously with the model's launch, Google began integrating Gemini directly into the Chrome browser's address bar. Initially available to US users, this integration allows direct access to all Gemini features without the need for a separate app or website. This is a crucial move for Google's ecosystem strategy, as Chrome, being the world's most widely used browser, possesses enormous distribution power. AI functionality will thus be just a click away for billions of users.
