The LTE (4G) network in Germany is less than a decade old, and already a new mobile communications standard is on the horizon. 5G is expected to offer data rates 100 times higher than today's 4G networks – that would be up to 10,000 Mbps. But it will likely be some time before the new mobile technology reaches consumers' smartphones. The current Ericsson Mobility Report projects only four million 5G mobile connections worldwide for 2019. After that, however, things are expected to move very quickly: by 2023, there should be around one billion 5G mobile connections – 105 million of them in Western Europe.
